Baseball Competes Hard, Splits DH with Arcadia

FLEMINGTON, NJ (March 26, 2021)- FDU Baseball hosted Arcadia University at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ on Friday afternoon, splitting a double header, 5-2 and 9-5. With the split, the Devils move to 3-7 overall and in the MAC Freedom and the Knights go to 7-3 overall and in conference play.

GAME 1- 5-2 W
First Year DJ McGuinness started on the mound for FDU.

Arcadia struck early, scoring a run in the top of the first inning off an RBI single. McGuinness shut the door on the Knights in the second, third and fourth inning, before Arcadia broke through again in the fifth, increasing the lead to, 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, the Devils offense found their stride. Senior Joe Moskowitz walked, senior Michael Tufano singled and sophomore backstop, Chris Kubas got FDU on the board with an RBI double, scoring Moskowitz. First-year Tyrus Chippendale stepped to the dish, ripping a single to score Tufano and tie the game at Two. After Chippendale stole second and senior Nate Peacock walked, Arcadia made a pitching change.

Senior Matt Nodoro took advantage of the switch, cracking a fastball into left center for an RBI, scoring Kubas and giving FDU their first lead of the game, 3-2. Sophomore Tommy Moore then capped the Devils rally off with a two RBI single to left field. After the turf settled, FDU held the 5-2 advantage. Senior Matthew Godlewski took the ball in the sixth, sitting Arcadia down in order and recording a strikeout, handing it off to Senior AJ Yurista who recorded the save in the seventh, his first of the year, closing the door on the Devils victory.

Notes

Game 2- 9-5 L
Senior Joseph Kastner started on the hill for FDU.

The Knights started the first inning of game two hot, scoring two runs on two hits and an error. Kastner responded in the top of the second with a three up, three down, to keep FDU close. After a Tufano two-out bunt single in the bottom of the second, Arcadia left him stranded to hold a 2-0 advantage. Kastner worked out of trouble in the third and sat the Knights down in order in the fourth. After a FDU fielding miscue allowed an Arcadia run to score in the fifth, a missed fly ball in the infield gave the Knights a 4-0 lead. Arcadia scored three runs in the top of the sixth to increase the lead to 7-0.

FDU continued to fight offensively, putting together a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, started by junior Tyler McCulloch. After Mac and Moskowitz walked, Tufano smacked another single for an RBI, scoring McCulloch. Then, a sophomore DJ Gonnelli fielder's choice scored Moskowitz to cut the score to 7-2. Arcadia added a run in the eighth and ninth innings to increase the gap. Down 9-2 with three outs left, FDU battled again, scoring three straight runs, thanks to doubles from Peacock and Nodoro, an RBI single from McCulloch and an RBI double from Moore. The effort however, fell short. Arcadia stranded two runners in the last inning to hold on for the victory, 9-5.
