Men's Lacrosse Picks up First Win of the Season, 10-8

MADISON, NJ (March 20, 2021)- FDU Men's Lacrosse picked up their first win of the season at Robert T. Shields Field on Saturday afternoon, 10-8. With the victory, the Devils improve to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom while the Warriors fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the MAC Freedom.

First Quarter

Lycoming started the scoring early in the contest with a goal at the 13:53 mark. After back and forth play ensued over the next nine-minutes, the Devils offense capitalized. At the 4:06 mark, senior Tyler Garcia took a pass from junior Zane Johnston and deposited it behind the Warriors goalkeeper to tie the game at one. Lycoming responded, scoring two goals over the next two-minutes of play to regain a 3-1 advantage headed into the next frame.

Second Quarter

The Warriors added another early in the second quarter, increasing their lead to 4-1. FDU stopped the Lyco run with 11:39 left in the half as Garcia recorded his second goal off another Johnston assist. It was Garcia just three-minutes later at 8:55 off a pass from sophomore Robbie Nawrocki, cutting the score to 4-3. With the momentum on the other side of the field, the Warriors answered with two straight goals to regain a 6-3 advantage. With under one-minute remaining in the half, the Devils netted another, their fourth of the game off the stick of sophomore Brian Stewart. At the break, Lycoming led 6-4.

In the half, senior goaltender for the Devils, Austin Van Holten made four saves.

Third Quarter

Lyco quickly added to their lead just two-minutes into the second half, netting their seventh of the game to increase the lead to 7-4. After another Van Holten save, FDU capitalized, thanks to another from Garcia, assisted by Johnston. At the end of three, the Warriors held the lead, 7-5.

Fourth Quarter

In the fourth, the Devils took control of the game. FDU scored four straight goals to take a 9-7 lead, with three from Garcia and one from Nawrocki. Leading by two, Lycoming responded with one of their own at the 3:08 mark to cut into the Devils advantage. With 2:00 minutes remaining in the contest, Johnston scored his first of the game to put a stamp on the FDU victory.

Career Day

Garcia had his best day in a Devils uniform, finishing with the most shots(8), shots on goal(8), goals(7) and points(7) in his career. He also played the most minutes of his career, 90 and grabbed the most ground balls in his career, three.

Goaltending

Van Holten finished the day with 15 saves, making 11 of them in the second half.

Cardinal Apples

On the day, Johnston collected five assists, the most in a single game in his career.
