Women's Basketball Battles Delaware Valley on Senior Night

MADISON, NJ (March 12, 2021)- On Friday evening, FDU Women's Basketball hosted Delaware Valley University on senior night, falling 62-39. With the loss, the Devils fall to 0-7 on the season while the Aggies improve to 4-4.

First Half
Del Val scored the game's first four-points before sophomore, Jayda Bing, connected on the games first three-pointer. After seven more points from the Aggies, first-year, Anissa Arteaga hit from three, knocking the Delaware Valley lead to five, 11-6 with :49 seconds remaining. The Aggies would score the final four-points of the first quarter and hold a 15-6 six advantage after ten.

In the second quarter, the Devils fought. First-year, Jade-Dee Tolentino started the scoring with a bucket in the paint, following by another basket, this time on the fast break. After a Del Val two to increase the lead back to seven, 17-10, Bing hit another from beyond he arc to respond. The momentum shifted back to Del Val with 5:50 remaining in the half, scoring four straight points and increasing the lead to nine, 22-13. Bing again had the answer, scoring four straight, knocking the Aggie advantage back to six, 22-16 at the 2:39 mark. The Devils continued to run, with Arteaga hitting another from three and Tolentino knocking one from beyond the arc off an assist from Arteaga.

Down two, 24-22 with 1:53 left in the half, Bing hit 1-of-2 from the line to cut the lead to one. Del Val had the response. Scoring the final seven points of the frame, closing out the half with a 31-23 advantage. FDU outscored the Aggies 17-16 in the second quarter.

Second Half
After back and forth baskets to start the third quarter, two from Bing inside the paint and two from Delaware Valley, the Aggies pulled away. Leading 33-27 with eight-minutes remaining, Del Val scored 25-points to close out the third leading, 58-29.

Bing continued to find the hoop in the fourth quarter, scoring a basket in the first minute. First-year, Brielle Fedo scored four, senior, Francesca Shipe scored three and Tolentino added two to round out the scoring in the final frame for FDU. Del Val finished the game with a 62-39 victory.

Lead Devil
Bing was on fire, scoring 15-points on 5-of-11 (45%) from the field including two three-pointers, five rebounds and two steals.

Even Numbers
In quarters two and four combined, the Devils outscored Del Val 28- 20. In the fourth quarter, FDU held the Aggies to only four points, outscoring them 9-4.

A true leader on and off the floor, Shipe has implemented herself into the fabric of the FDU Devils athletics community and women's basketball program. Named a captain in her second season, "Franch" as the team refers to her, averaged 4.3 PPG, 37% FG and 5.0 RBPG during her career. She has played in 28 games, starting eight, including all seven for the Devils in 2021. From her junior to senior season, Shipe increased her PPG average to 6.4, RBPG to 6.3 and shooting percentage to 38%. All-in-all, Francesca has proven what it truly means to be a Devil, every day. Not done with FDU athletics yet, Shipe is a two sport collegiate athlete and will begin competing for the Devils Softball program after the basketball season ends.
