Collegeville, Pa. (December 7) – Ursinus College raced out to a 19-5 lad over the first six minutes of the game and never relinquished its lead as the Bears topped the FDU-Florham men's basketball team, 82-59, in a non-conference contest inside D.L. Helfferich Hall tonight.
FDU (3-6) received a game-high 21 points and three rebounds from graduate student
Oliver Ortman (North Caldwell, NJ) as well as 17 points and five boards from junior
Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, NJ). Ryan Hughes led Ursinus (6-1) with a 21 point, 11 rebound double double.
After the Bears scored ten of the first eleven points of tonight's game, Ursinus held a double digit advantage in points the remainder of the half. FDU was able to cut its deficit to as few as 12 at 29-17 following a jumper by Summers Jr. with 6:29 to play in the stanza, but after both teams traded baskets Ursinus scored the final five points of the first for a 20 point (49-29) lead at the break.
FDU scored 13 consecutive points early in the second half and following a jumper by
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) trailed by just seven at 53-46 with still 13 minutes to play in regulation. Ursinus, however, answered with a 10-0 run of its own pushing its lead back to 17 at 68-51 as the Bears went on to win the non-conference matchup by an 82-59 final.
FDU shot 36.9-percent (24-for-65) from the floor, 19.0-percent (4-for-21) from behind the arc and 70.0-percent (7-for-10) from the free throw line. The Devils scored 38 of its 59 points from inside the paint and scored four points off of Ursinus turnovers.
The Bears were dominant on the glass as they held a 50-27 advantage in rebounds, while the Devils registered a 7-1 turnover differential.
FDU will play its final Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest of the calendar year on Saturday, December 11 as the Devils will head to Lycoming College for a 3:00 pm game.
