Madison, NJ (December 1) – Trailing 47-41 with five minutes to play in regulation, the FDU-Florham women's basketball team scored the final 20 points of the contest to defeat Delaware Valley University, 61-47, in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener for both squads.
The win today for the Devils marked the first career victory for
head coach Reggie Daniels and the first win for FDU-Florham since February 22, 2020. FDU improved to 1-6 overall on the season and 1-0 in MAC Freedom play, while the Aggies dropped to 3-4 in 2021 and to 0-1 in the league standings.
FDU's 20 point game ending run was sparked by seven points from
Jade-Dee Tolentino (West New York, NY), five points from
Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, NJ) and four points from
Arian Coleman (Camden, NJ). In the run, the Devils were a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, 2-for-3 from behind the arc and 4-for-6 from the floor.
The Devils scored the first four points of the game and led by a 7-6 margin after the first quarter. Delaware Valley outscored FDU, 15-14, in the second and tied the game at 21-21 at halftime.
Delaware Valley, which trailed 26-24 early in the third built its lead to six with 4:26 to play in the quarter following a 10-2 run layup by Taylor Richardson. FDU was able to cut its deficit to two following a free throw by Tolentino heading into the final ten minutes of play.
The visitors scored nine straight points in the fourth for a 47-41 edge before the Devils ripped off their 20-0 game ending run.
FDU saw five student-athletes score in double figures and was led by 13 point performances by both
Tamyah Jones (Dover, Del.) and Tolentino. Jones added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Tolentino tallied five boards, a block and three steals.
Cassidy Miller (Roxbury, NJ) guided the Devils defensively with 13 boards and three steals, while Coleman, who played all 40 minutes registered ten points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
As a team, FDU led statistically in steals (17-11) and blocks (4-2), while Delaware Valley held an edge in rebounds (47-46). The Devils shot 30.6-percent (19-for-62) from the floor, 32.1-percent (9-for-28) from three point range and cashed in 14-of-19 attempts (73.7-percent) from the free throw line. FDU scored 18 points in the paint and scored 19 points off of Delaware Valley's 23 turnovers.
FDU will welcome Wilkes University to Madison on Saturday, December 4 for another MAC Freedom contest at 1:00 pm.
