Madison, NJ (November 20) – The FDU-Florham women's basketball team held a 25-21 lead at the halftime break, but William Paterson used a third quarter run to defeat the Devils, 52-49, tonight in a non-conference contest inside the Ferguson Recreation Center.
The loss dropped FDU's record to 0-4, while William Paterson earned its first win of the season and is now 1-3 in 2021.
FDU was led by
Brielle Fedo (Lake Hopatcong, NJ), who scored a team high 12 points, while
Tamyah Jones (Dover, Del.) chipped in with eight points and seven boards and
Arian Coleman (Camden, NJ) added seven points and seven rebounds.
William Paterson jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but the Devils worked their way back and scored ten straight points for an 11-6 edge with 2:28 to play in the first following a free throw by
Kiley Drezek (Seymour, Conn.). FDU maintained an 11-10 lead through one.
FDU built its largest lead of the game at 20-13 midway through the second following an 8-3 run to open the quarter. The spurt featured three points from both Fedo and Drezek. Both teams traded baskets heading into the break as a jumper by Coleman and a jumper by Justina Cabezas made the score 25-21 at halftime.
The Pioneers trailed 27-21 with 7:54 to play in the third, but put together a 13-3 run for the 33-30 edge. FDU maintained its composure on the court and tied the game up at 35-35 following a deep three by
Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, NJ), but William Paterson went ahead 40-37 as the buzzer sounded.
With 2:16 to play, William Paterson led 51-44 but a jumper by Coleman and a three by Fedo brought the Devils to within two with under a minute left. Brianna Brooks hit the back end of two free throws and FDU's game tying three came up just short as the Pioneers escaped with a 52-49 victory.
As a team, FDU shot 30.2-percent (16-for-53) from the floor, 20.0-percent (5-for-25) from behind the arc and 60.0-percent (12-for-20) from the free throw line.
Statistically, William Paterson led in rebounds (45-35), while FDU led 16-13 in steals.
FDU (0-4) will welcome crosstown rival Drew University to the Rec Center on Tuesday, November 23 at 6:00 pm.
