Men's Basketball Edged By Rutgers-Newark, 68-62

Madison, NJ (November 20) – Rutgers-Newark built a six point halftime lead and was able to hold off a late run by the FDU-Florham men's basketball team as the Scarlet Raiders defeated the Devils, 68-62, in a non-conference matchup from inside the Ferguson Recreation Center tonight.

The loss drops FDU's record to 2-3 on the season, while Rutgers-Newark improved to 3-1 in 2021.

FDU was led by Oliver Ortman (North Caldwell, NJ), who tallied a team high 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists on a 7-for-13 shooting effort from the floor. Matthew Johnson (Oak Ridge, NJ) chipped in with 15 points and four rebounds, while Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 11 points and four boards off the bench for the Devils.

Rutgers-Newark's Levi Holton and Dante Ralph both notched 18 points apiece leading the Scarlet Raiders to the win.

The first half of the opening stanza was tightly contested as the lead changed six times over the first 13 minutes of the contest. A jumper by Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, NJ) gave the Devils a 20-18 edge, but the visitors closed the first half on a 14-5 run that gave them a 32-26 lead at the break.

Rutgers-Newark took its largest lead of the game at 14 points (45-31) at the 15:41 mark of the second half following a jumper by Abe Kromah. The Devils worked and put together a run of their own and were able to get within two possessions after a four point swing by Ortman. The Scarlet Raiders hit their free throws with under a minute to play as they took the road win, 68-62.

As a team, FDU shot 43.1-percent (22-for-51) from the floor, 34.6-percent (9-for-26) from behind the arc and 75.0-percent (9-for-12) from the free throw line. Rutgers-Newark held a 35-27 edge in rebounds, while FDU led statically in steals (7-5), blocks (2-1) and assists (12-9).

FDU (2-3) will welcome The King's College (NY) to Madison for its final game of November on Tuesday the 23rd at 8:00 pm.
