Madison, NJ (November 20) – For the first time in program history, the FDU-Florham hoisted a trophy on the final day of the season as the Devils topped Saint Vincent College, 38-19, in the 2021 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III James Lynah Bowl.
For his efforts, senior wide receiver
Connor Perez (Warwick, NY), who posted eight catches, 122 receiving yards and three total touchdowns in today's game, was named as the MVP of the bowl game.
FDU wrapped up its historic season with a 7-4 overall record and reached the seven win mark for just the second time in program history. The last time FDU football won seven games was in 1993 when the Devils went 8-3 and ended its season in an ECAC Bowl Game.
Today marked FDU's third appearance in an ECAC Bowl Game. Previously, the Devils fell to Wesley in 1993 and to Wilkes in 1999.
After five drives stalled with no scoring in the first quarter, Saint Vincent broke the scoreless tie with a 73 yard touchdown pass on its first play of the drive as Brady Walker found Molayo Irefin for the score.
The Devils answered with a 5:38 drive that was split between the first and second quarters. On fourth and five, FDU ran a trick play that saw Perez throw a 27 yard bullet to
Rory Sullivan (Hazlet, NJ), who got all the way down to the one yard line.
Nicolas Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, NY) capped the drive and knotted the game up at 7-7 on a rush up the middle.
Saint Vincent scored on the ensuing possession that lasted just 51 seconds on a 55 yard touchdown pass, but once again FDU answered with a touchdown of its own as Perez ran the ball five yards for the score. The Bearcats attempted a two point conversion on their drive and failed so it was the Devils who took a 14-13 lead with 3:34 to play in the first half.
That touchdown by Perez was the first seven of 31 unanswered points for FDU as the Devils broke the game open with a touchdown prior to halftime as well as two touchdowns and a field goal in the third quarter. FDU led 38-13 through 45 minutes of action.
Following a 28 yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter, Saint Vincent took possession of the ball at its 31 yard line.
Marquez Haywood (Lindenwold, NJ) sacked Walker for a four yard loss and thought he had recovered the fumble but the quarterback was called down before the play was over. On the very next play however,
Matthew Dougherty (Wilmington, Del.) intercepted the ball and gave possession back to the Devils. On the ensuing drive, Perez posted his third touchdown of the day, a 32 yard strike from Caserta for the 38-13 lead.
Saint Vincent looked to close the gap in the fourth, but FDU's defense on a first and goal from the three yard line stopped the Bearcats on four straight plays ending their 17 play, 66 yard drive. The visitors did find the endzone prior to the conclusion of the game as the contest ended with the Devils claiming the 38-19 victory.
Caserta led FDU's offense as he completed 22 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns. Perez and Sullivan accounted for the three touchdowns through the air, while Perez and Santavicca both scored touchdowns on the ground.
Alnazir Blackman (Irvington, NJ) led the Devils with 96 total yards on the ground.
