FDU Women's Soccer Edged By Wilkes, 2-1, in MAC Freedom Playoffs

Madison, NJ (November 2) – The fourth-seeded FDU-Florham women's soccer team fell to fifth-seeded Wilkes University, 2-1, in the opening round of the 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) tournament tonight on Robert T. Shields Field.

FDU-Florham (12-7-2) will await word of a potential bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason tournament, while Wilkes (8-8-2) will travel to top seed and nationally ranked No. 4 Misericordia University on Thursday evening for the MAC Freedom semifinals.

Wilkes its first goal with two minutes to play in the first half. Tatiana Macera played the ball off of an FDU and passed it to Emily Bidelspach, who scored on a 1-on-1 opportunity with Devils keeper Erica Blackburn (Marlboro, NJ)

The Devils peppered the net and out shot the Colonels, 9-3, in the second half.  FDU nearly took the lead in the 56th minute when Amanda Croce (Wayne, NJ) ripped a shot of the crossbar and finally scored in the 60th minute. Ashley Dietrich (Middletown, NJ) played the ball from the right side to Francesca Escudero (Bridgewater, NJ), who headed the ball into the net tying the match up at 1-1. Escudero's goal was her second of the season.

The contest looked like it was headed for extra time, but with a little over six minutes to play, Victoria Burkhart fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 30 yards out giving the visitors a 2-1 edge. FDU was held without a shot for the final six minutes of action as the game ended, 2-1, in favor of Wilkes in tonight's postseason matchup.

Over the 90 minute match, FDU held a slim 13-9 advantage in shots (7-6 on goal) and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Blackburn made four saves in net for the Devils, while Hannah Landis stopped the ball six times for Wilkes.

FDU will now await word of a potential bid to the ECAC Tournament. The ECAC will reveal its selections, hosts and bracket after NCAA bids are awarded on Monday, November 8.
