Madison, NJ (November 13) – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team fell to Rutgers-Newark University, 1-0, in the opening round of the 2021 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tonight on Robert T. Shields Field.
FDU sees its season come to a close with a record 12-8-2, while Rutgers-Newark improved to 10-5-3 and will play Stockton University in the semifinal round tomorrow.
The difference in today's contest came in the 65th minute as Rutgers-Newark was awarded a penalty kick. Leila Ettayebi converted with a shot to the lower left corner of the net for the 1-0 edge. The Scarlet Raiders nearly scored ten minutes earlier as Sabria Glasgow's shot hit the left post and trickled through the goal mouth, but the score at that point remained 0-0.
FDU had a number of good looks at net including shots by
Ashleigh Frankel (Branchburg, NJ) and
Amanda Croce (Wayne, NJ) off of corner kicks, but came up in the end just short in today's ECAC quarterfinal matchup.
As a team, FDU out shot Rutgers-Newark, 15-10 (6-6 on goal), while the Scarlet Raiders held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
This is the fourth consecutive season that the Devils have posted double digit wins under head coach
Kristin Giotta. Over those four years, FDU has combined for 52 victories and postseason appearances in each season.
