Madison, NJ (February 8, 2020)- FDU Women's Basketball team defeated King's College on Saturday afternoon, 76-74. With the win, the Devils improve to 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the MAC Freedom Conference while the Monarchs drop to 12-9 and 6-4 in the conference.
FIRST HALF
FDU held leads twice in the frame, once at the 6:22 mark thanks to a freshman
Angela Downey three and again at the 5:49 mark on a senior
Cayla Staggers bucket. The devils were outscored 24-16 in the games first ten minutes, with King's going on a 17-7 run to close out the first quarter.
The devils started quarter number two on a 6-0 run with three-pointers by senior
Jennah Roman and Downey. After the Monarchs scored on their next two possessions, FDU respond with four straight of their own from sophomore
Francesca Shipe and freshman
Jayda Bing. The Devils would go on to out score King's in the second quarter 20-15, giving the Monarchs a 39-36 advantage at the break.
SECOND HALF
With 5:55 remaining in the third quarter, FDU would tie the score up for the first time since the first quarter, 46-46, after Downey knocked down another triple on a assist from Bing. 40 seconds later, the Devils would take their first lead since 5-minutes into the game, 48-46 on a Bing bucket. Another bucket 30 seconds later from junior
Aleah Bass would increase the FDU lead to four. Back and forth play spelled the remainder of the quarter with King's regaining a one-point advantage, 55-54 heading into the last 10-minutes.
After FDU built a five-point lead with 2:25 remaining, King's responded with five straight points in less than a minute to tie the score 74-74 with 1:49 remaining. With :17 seconds on the clock, Bing stepped to the line and knocked down two free throws to seal the victory.
LEAD DEVIL
Downey had a career night, knocking down eight three-pointers in the game and scoring 24-points. These totals are both career highs for her in a Devils uniform.
LUCKY 13
Roman, Bing and sophomore
Helen Ishmael all finished the game with 13 points. Ishmael didn't stop there, reaching the double-double plateau thanks to 12 rebounds.
ASSIST MACHINES
Staggers and Roman set their teammates up all day, combining for 10 total assists with each play finishing with five.
