ST. DAVIDS, PA (February 12, 2020) – FDU Women's Basketball won their second consecutive game on Wednesday, defeating Eastern University 64-61. The Devils improve to 5-17 overall and 3-8 in the MAC Freedom Conference, while the Eagles fall to 12-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
FIRST HALF
The first quarter was controlled by Eastern, outscoring FDU 19-8. Senior
Jennah Roman, freshman
Jayda Bing and junior
Aleah Bass combined for the Devils eight points. After the Eagles jumped out to a 24-13 advantage with 7:51 left in the second quarter, the Devils got hot, going on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to four. Eastern hit a three and FDU senior
Cayla Staggers hit a bucket, for a halftime score of 27-22.
SECOND HALF
FDU wasted no time getting on the board in the third quarter, as freshman
Jayda Bing started things off with a three. Less than a minute later, fellow freshman
Angela Downey knocked down a triple of her own to give the Devils their first lead since the opening minute. FDU continued to roll, outscoring Eastern 19-13 down the stretch to finish the third quarter ahead, 47-40.
Sophomore
Helen Ishmael added to the Devil lead with a basket at 7:21, the first points of the fourth quarter for either side. Eastern continued to fight, tying the game at 51 with 3:33 remaining. Downey would respond with a three, and Ishmael would add a two, increasing the lead back to five for FDU. The Eagles would add six straight, making it a one-point game with one-minute left. Clutch free throws under one-minute remaining from Roman, Staggers and Bing sealed the victory for FDU.
LEAD DEVILS
Roman filled up the stat sheet for FDU, finishing the game with 21 points, five assists and four rebounds. Bing added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE
For the second straight game, Ishmael finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing a career high 13 rebounds.
TAKING CHARGE
Not only did she lead the Devils on the offensive side of the ball, Roman drew three charges on the defensive end.
SHARING THE ROCK
The combination of Roman, Bing and Staggers each recorded five assists.
