Devils Fall to Stevens in MAC Freedom Semi-Finals

Finish with three scorers in double figures

HOBOKEN, NJ (February 26, 2020)- The FDU Men's Basketball team competed in the semi-finals of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament on Wednesday night, falling to top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology, 72-53. This marks the end of the 2019-20 season for the Devils, a year which saw them make the playoffs for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

FIRST HALF
Stevens got started with a quick two-points 20-seconds into the game. FDU had their response, thanks to five straight points from junior Oliver Ortman to give the Devils an early 5-2 lead. After another Ducks basket, it was Ortman again, this time with a bucket in the paint. FDU would continue to build, going on an 8-0 run that included a three-pointer and three free throws from senior Andy Fleurantin, FDU held a 13-5 advantage at the 14:46 mark. The Ducks would respond, scoring ten straight points to retake the lead,15-13. Two free throws from freshman Joseph Nigro at 10:16 would knot the score at 15 apiece. The Devils would then go on a 7-3 run, jump-started by a three from Freshman Andrew Schulz, making the score 22-18. Stevens would answer with an 11-0 run of their own, taking a 29-22 lead with 4:41 remaining in the first half. Fleurantin ended the run at 3:06, drawing a foul and knocking down two free throws. FDU finished the first half on a 6-2 run, but Stevens held the lead at the break, 31-28.

SECOND HALF
FDU started right where they left off, scoring 11 straight points in the first two-minute of the second half, regaining a 39-31 advantage, thanks to a three-pointer from Schulz and two from senior Kenneth LaRocca. Stevens responded with a 4-0 run of their own, cutting the Devils lead to 39-36 with 16:30 remaining in the half. It was LaRocca again for his third three in the first five-minutes of the second half, increasing the FDU lead back to six, 42-36. Stevens again had the response, this time in the form of a 6-0 run to tie the game at 42-42. Junior Cameron Saintil answered, knocking down a bucket to stop the Ducks run and give the Devils back a two-point advantage. Both teams would cool off, with neither side scoring a point for three straight minutes. That would end, thanks to another three-pointer from Schulz at 11:42, giving FDU a 47-43 advantage. After a defensive stop, it was Fleurantin stepping up for FDU and increasing the Devils lead to six with 11:07 remaining. Stevens would score seven of the games next eight points to tie the score at 50-50 with just under 10-minutes remaining. Less than a minute later, Stevens would regain the lead for the first time since the start of the second half, 52-50. The Ducks would extend their lead to as much as 11, 61-50, on the heals of a 14-0 run. The deficit was too much for the Devils to handle, with Stevens holding on to advance to the championship game.

LEAD DEVILS
Ortman led all Devils in scoring with 12 points, while both Fleurantin and Schulz finished the game with 11 points apiece.

FROM COACH
"So proud of our guys. And so appreciative of our two seniors - Andy and Kenny. We're not where we want to be but for the first time in a while Devils Basketball is on the map. Our support tonight was incredible - other student-athletes, other coaches, our President and Campus Executive. We can't thank them all enough for making that feel like a home game for much of it. Obviously disappointed with the result but you see how many people traveled to support this program and it only motivates us more to get back to the same position and work for a different outcome."- Head Coach Jeff Slanovec

SEASON END
This concludes the 2019-20 campaign for FDU, with the Devils looking to build off their first postseason appearance since the 2013-14 season.
