WAYNE, N.J. (September 7, 2019) – Junior Erica Martins and senior Erika Pita each netted goals as the FDU women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with William Paterson University Sunday.
FDU is now 3-0-1 while the Pioneers are 2-1-1.
The Pioneers controlled the play early, earning three of the first four shots of the game. Junior Ashley Paulino made consecutive stops in the 14th minute, and the hosts thought they had taken a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Off a corner kick, a headed shot inched toward the goal but was cleared off the line in time by a Devils defender.
The action went back and forth before the visiting Devils broke through in the 35th minute. Off a corner kick, Pita redirected a pass to Martins, who finished the chance at the far post for her first goal of the season. The Devils didn't allow an opportunity for the remainder of the half and went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers needed just 1:04 to level the game in the second half. Off a corner, Paulino made the initial save, but the rebound caromed right to another WPU player who scored. Four minutes later, the hosts took their first lead of the afternoon. Paulino made another save, but the rebound found the foot a Pioneer player in the center of the box. She ripped a shot that eluded the Devils keeper, giving WPU the 2-1 lead.
The Devils pressed for the tying tally and found it in the 63rd minute. Junior Tatiana Nieto slid a pass along the left seam to Pita, who beat the goalkeeper near the edge of the box. With the keeper out of the position, Pita slotted the ball into the back of the net to equalize the match at two. Paulino made two additional saves, including one with 4:40 left to send the game into overtime.
Both sides had shot attempts sail wide in the opening overtime, but the hosts had the best chance in the 92nd minute. Paulino snared a shot attempt, and the game moved onto a second extra period. The Devils best opportunity came in the 102nd minute, but a header by Pita went wide. The Pioneers looked to win it late, but a header in the 108th minute rang off the crossbar.
