Women's Soccer Blanks Centenary, 4-0

MADISON, N.J. (September 10, 2019) – Senior Erika Pita and junior Madeline Finnegan each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the FDU women's soccer team past Centenary University 4-0 Tuesday evening.

FDU moves to 4-0-1 with the win, while the Cyclones fall to 0-3-1.

The Devils needed just 52 seconds to take the lead. Pita dribbled down the middle of the field and found Finnegan on the right flank. Finnegan maneuvered in and fired a shot that beat the goalkeeper at the far post. Pita nearly doubled the lead in the 13th minute, but her attempt sailed just over the crossbar.

FDU continued the pressure, almost converting on a nifty set-piece chance. Junior Tatiana Nieto sent in a free-kick that narrowly missed Finnegan's head and went out for a goal-kick. With just under six minutes remaining in the opening stanza, junior Amanda Croce weaved through the defense, but her shot was right on target and snared by the keeper.

Junior Nathalia Gallo sent in a looping free-kick from 35 yards out, and the shot was bobbled and recovered by the goalkeeper without further damage. The Cyclones best chance for the equalizer came in the 49th minute, as an attempt was knocked around the box before being pushed out of bounds by junior Ashley Paulino.

The Devils continued to apply pressure, with junior Erica Martins rifling an attempt that missed by inches of the top corner. FDU finally found the second goal in the 63rd minute. After stripping the ball from a defender in the attacking third, junior Amanda Croce dribbled a couple of steps before releasing a shot that beat the goalkeeper near side.

FDU would tally a pair of goals within 1:10 span to break the game open. First, Finnegan sent in a perfect cross that Pita one-touch volleyed into the back of the goal to make it 3-0. Nieto corralled a loose ball and dribbled just inside the 25-yard line. She boomed a shot from 24 yards out into the upper corner of the goal to seal the 4-0 Devils victory.
