MADISON, N.J. (September 3, 2019) - Junior
Madeline Finnegan scored twice to lead the FDU women's soccer team past Kean University 4-1 Tuesday evening.
FDU improves to 3-0 on the season, while Kean suffered their first setback and is 2-1.
The host Devils came out of the gate ready to attack the offensive end, as their first opportunity came at 3:20 into the game, when a cross by junior
Amanda Croce to sophomore
Brianna Cucinelli ended up just wide. In the 17th minute of action, FDU saw another attempt come just short, as this time junior
Nathalia Gallo missed executing off a free-kick. With only 15 minutes remaining in the half, another FDU opportunity failed to come to fruition as senior
Erika Pita broke through inside the box, but her attempt rolled just wide.
With the score still at 0-0, junior goalie
Ashley Paulino thwarted a Kean shot in the 32nd minute. Two minutes later FDU would hit the back of the net for the first time on the night as junior
Tatiana Nieto corralled a loose ball and rifled a shot into the upper corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Entering the second half, the Devils needed just 21 seconds to double their lead. Junior
Erica Martins dribbled down the sideline and sent in a low cross to classmate Finnegan. Finnegan redirected the ball into the back of the goal for her third tally of the season. Pita had another chance in the 55th minute, but she was unable to convert. Pita made amends minutes later, dribbling around several Cougar defenders. She laid a pass back to senior
Nicolette Roberts who rifled a shot that glanced off the Cougars goalkeepers' hands and in.
FDU wasn't done scoring, as 1:53 later Finnegan netted her second goal of the game. It was Nieto who was involved once again, sending a nifty pass through to Finnegan who tapped the pass into the goal. The Cougars cut into the Devils lead with their lone goal of the game, coming in the 77th minute. Just nearing the end of the game, FDU junior goalie
Jenna Rand denied Kean's attempt to lower the deficit, as she saved a shot aimed at the bottom of the goalpost.
