READING, Pa. (September 25, 2019) – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 match to Albright College on Wednesday evening.
The loss was the first for the Devils on the 2019 season, as they fall to 8-1-1. With the win, the Lions jump to 6-3.
The Devils fired off three shots-on-goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest, as the trio of juniors in Erica Martins, Tatiana Nieto, and Amanda Croce all fired off attempts. In the 17th minute, freshman Jenna Conanan had her attempt corralled by the Lions goalie. The Lions tried to score in the 25th minute, but junior goalie Ashley Paulino hauled in the shot for the save.
Albright would get on the board a few minutes later when they executed an attempt in the 29th minute. The Devils were not able to get on the scoreboard for the remainder of the half, as Albright took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Devils entered the period looking to tie things up, as Croce saw her attempt come up saved in the 51st minute. In the 56th minute, the Lions were able to double their advantage courtesy of a penalty kick. With 14 minutes left in the final half, another Devil player penetrated through the Lions defense for a shot, as this time sophomore Brianna Cucinelli fired off a shot to the bottom left corner that was snared by the keeper.
FDU kept knocking on the door and were rewarded with a goal in the 80th minute. After a foul from just outside the box, junior Tatiana Nieto fired a free-kick attempt into the goal to cut the lead in half. Nieto had a pair of additional chances late in the game, but both attempts were denied by the Lions. The hosts were credited with a team stop in the 85th minute, keeping the game at 2-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Devils outshot the Lions, 26-6 and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
- Paulino recorded two saves in goal.
- Junior Miranda Rosa made her first start on the season.
- Nieto now has five goals on the season.
