Pita's Overtime Winner Sends Women's Soccer Past Staten Island

MADISON, N.J. (October 2, 2019) – The FDU women's soccer team defeated the College of Staten Island in overtime by a score of 2-1.

The Devils improve to 9-1-1 and the Dolphins go to 3-5 on the season.

In the first period, the Devils picked up the offensive momentum early as they registered their first shot attempt of the game at the 19th minute when senior Erika Pita had her attempt saved by the Dolphins goalie. At the 28th minute of the contest, junior Madeline Finnegan recorded a shot-on-goal attempt. The Devils continued to scratch their way towards the score sheet and at the 30th minute, they would strike. Jenna Conanan nailed an attempt from 25-yards out, to give the Devils the 1-0 lead. In the 31st minute, the Devils recorded two-straight shot attempts, as first, junior Tatiana Nieto had her attempt blocked. Three seconds later, Pita fired off an attempt, that the College of Staten Island goalie was able to corral in. Both teams remained scoreless, as the game went into the halftime stoppage.

The Devils entered the second half looking to strike, as, in the 73rd minute, junior Nathalia Gallo's attempt was saved. In the 79th minute, the Dolphins got on the board as they connected on their attempt. Both teams would not score for the remainder of regulation, as the game went into overtime tied at 1-1.  As soon as the buzzer sounded, the Devils were eager to win the game. In the 91st minute, junior Erica Martins' shot was saved. In the 95th minute, however, the Devils would secure the win. Sophomore Sydney Weber found Pita who rushed down the field and fired off the game-winning shot. The Pita goal cemented the 2-1 FDU win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Pita has registered a point in all but two games this season.
  • With her ninth goal on the season, Pita leads all Middle Atlantic Conference-Freedom players.
  • Junior Ashley Paulino had one save on the night.
  • Weber has three assists on the season.
  • FDU outshot the Dolphins, 27-2 and had the control in corners kicks, 6-1.

UP NEXT
FDU takes to the road on Saturday, to visit Wilkes in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action. The MAC Freedom opener will begin play at 3 p.m.
