Wilkes Knocks Off Women's Soccer in MAC Freedom Opener

WILKES BARRE, Pa. (October 5, 2019) - The FDU women's soccer team fell to Wilkes University on Saturday by a score of 3-1. 
 
The Devils fall to 9-2-1 on the season, and 0-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play. Wilkes improves to 4-4-1 and 1-0 in MAC Freedom action.
 
In the 12th minute, the Devils had two shot attempts. Sophomore Brianna Cucinelli fired off a shot that the Wilkes goalie was able to come up with. Junior Erica Martins followed, with an effort of her own, that resulted in a save. In the 13th minute, Wilkes struck first with a goal.
 
Down 1-0, the Devils needed just 42 seconds to pull level. In the 14th minute, junior Tatiana Nieto hit Pita with a pass, which she executed on a breakway to beat the goalkpeer. In the 31st minute, the Colonels added to their lead to take a 2-1 advantage. Wilkes held on to their lead, heading into the second half.
 
The Colonels doubled their lead in the 52nd minute, to go up by a score of 3-1. In the 55th minute, senior Nicolette Roberts fired off an attempt that was brought in by the Wilkes goalkeeper. Both teams would not score from that point on, as Wilkes secured the win. FDU had numerous shots in the second period, but were unable to put a shot on target. The final chance came with 56 seconds remaining, as a header by junior Stephanie Corea went wide right.

  • Nieto added to her MAC-Freedom lead in assists, with 11. 
  • FDU outshot Wilkes 13-11 and controlled the margin in corner kicks, 8-3.
