Martins' Career Night Propels Women's Soccer Past St. Joseph's - Long Island

MADISON, N.J. (October 8, 2019) - The FDU women's soccer team used a career-night from junior Erica Martins to blank St. Joseph's College – Long Island, 8-0.

With the win, the Devils jump to 10-2-1, and the Golden Eagles fall to 6-5-1.

The Devils' first score of the game came only six minutes into the contest, as freshman Jenna Conanan found Martins for the score. In the eighth minute, it was Martins again; this time, the goal came off a pass from junior Madeline Finnegan. The Golden Eagles attempt to score in the 18th minute was squandered when junior Ashley Paulino came up with the save. Paulino registered back-to-back saves in the 25th and 26th minute, to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless. 

In the 31st minute, the Devils struck again. Senior Erika Pita hit junior Nathalia Gallo with a pass, then Gallo quickly shuffled the ball to classmate Tatiana Nieto, who found the back of the net, to extend the Devils lead to 3-0. The Devils continued to attack the Golden Eagles defense, as, in the 37th minute, junior Amanda Croce hit the crossbar. The game remained scoreless for the rest of the half, and the Devils went into the halftime break with the lead.

The Devils picked up right where they left off in the new frame. In the 55th minute, Martins completed the hat-trick, as she took the ball herself to the goal to extend the Devils lead to 4-0. Up 5-0, the Devils did not let down, and in the 70th minute, they executed once again. Sophomore Maria Del Sordi found Pita, who found the net for the score. In the 73rd minute, freshman goalie Brianna Branagan came up with the save on the Golden Eagles attempt to score. 

Up 6-0, the Devils would add to their lead. In the 73rd minute, Nieto took advantage of an assist from Croce and Pita, to score. With the end of the match nearing, the Devils would score for one final time. In the 83rd minute, Julia Bonaccorso registered the assist off a pass to Croce, who connected for the score. As the horn sounded, the Devils wrapped-up the game to secure the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • With the three-goal performance, Martins set a new career-high.
  • Conanan's assist was the first of her career.                   
  • With her performance, Pita now has 11 goals on the season and seven assists. 
  • With her two-goal outing, Nieto raises her goal total to seven on the season. 
  • Both Del Sordi and Bonaccorso earned their first career assists.
  • The Devils outshot the Golden Eagles 25-10 and won the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3.

FDU returns home on Saturday for their second Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom matchup, as they host Misericordia University at noon.
