Wilkes Tops Volleyball in MAC Freedom Action

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (September 24, 2019) – The FDU volleyball team was topped by Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom foe Wilkes University 25-7, 25-22, 25-16 Tuesday evening.

FDU drops to 4-6 on the season and 0-2 in the MAC Freedom while Wilkes improves to 9-6, 1-1 in the conference.

The Devils fell behind early, as the Colonels netted 10 of the first 14 markers. A solo block by rookie Sophia Miskulin trimmed the gap to five, but the hosts reeled off the next seven tallies to take a double-digit lead. Junior Liz Moise and sophomore Ashley Dellolio stopped the rally with kills from sophomore Kacie Ros, but Wilkes closed out the first set with the final seven points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

FDU raced out a 9-5 edge in the second stanza, with the run capped off with a kill from senior Nathalia Padron. Padron added an ace to keep the four-point advantage, but the host Colonels leveled the frame at 14 thanks to a 4-0 spurt. The Colonels pulled in front for the first time in the set at 17-15, but FDU responded with five of the next six to go up 20-18. Four unforced errors by Wilkes aided FDU during the run. The rally was short-lived, as Wilkes battled back to notch seven of the final nine points to double their advantage.

The final period was close, as a kill from Moise trimmed the Devils deficit to just one point at 7-6. 10 of the next 12 markers went in favor of Wilkes, extending their lead to nine at 17-8. After Padron pinned down a Ros set to make the score 17-10, the Colonels embarked on one final big run, stretching the gap to double-digits with five consecutive points.

The Devils didn't go down quietly, as Padron served up four aces during a 6-0 spurt, including three straight to cap off the rally. The Devils couldn't get any closer, as the hosts gained the final three points to conclude the match.
