READING, Pa. (September 22, 2019) – Senior Dari Lyons penalty kick goal in the 84th minute proved to be the difference at the FDU women's soccer team downed Alvernia University 2-1 Sunday.
FDU improves to 8-0-1, while Alvernia drops to 3-4.
The Devils recorded the game's first shot just 90 seconds in, as senior Nicolette Roberts had her attempt stopped by the goalkeeper. The Golden Wolves picked up the pressure firing the next four attempts that were denied by junior goalkeeper Ashley Paulino. FDU was awarded consecutive corner kicks in the 14th minute but were unable to find the back of the net.
FDU broke through for the opening tally in the 23rd minute. Senior Erika Pita, the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Offensive Player of the Week, netted her team-leading eighth goal of the year to give the Devils the 1-0 lead. Freshman Francesca Escudero corralled a loose ball and found junior Tatiana Nieto with a pass. Nieto slid a thru-ball to Pita, who beat the defense and sent a low shot into the back of the goal. The visitors hunted for the second goal, with shots by juniors Barbara Ferreira, Nathalia Gallo, and Brianna Cucinelli getting stopped by the Alvernia goalie.
The Devils outshot the hosts 11-7 in the first half and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Paulino was tested often, fending off six shots.
FDU's defensive unit allowed just one shot in the second half and nearly added to their lead in the 78th minute. Off a corner kick, an attempt by junior Madison Rosa was snared by the Golden Wolves keeper. As time ticked away, the Golden Wolves were whistled for a foul in the box, and the Devils were awarded a penalty kick. Lyons stepped up to the spot and took the penalty, converting and giving FDU their second goal of the afternoon.
The penalty kick conversion proved to be crucial, as just 90 seconds later, Alvernia pulled within a goal. The Devils defense buckled down and didn't allow a shot over the final 4:29 to preserve the 2-1 road victory.
