Women's Soccer Storms Past Manhattanville 9-0

PURCHASE, N.Y. (September 18, 2019) - The FDU women's soccer team used five first-half goals en route to a 9-0 win over Manhattanville College Wednesday.

The Devils are off to their best start in program history and improved to 7-0-1. Manhattanville drops to 2-4 on the season.

FDU needed just 6:26 to open the scoring, as junior Amanda Croce netted her sixth tally of the year. Classmate Tatiana Nieto sent in a free-kick, and the ball found Croce who sent the shot directly into the back of the net. The visiting Devils nearly doubled their advantage in the 16th minute, but rookie Francesa Escudero's attempt hit the crossbar.

The roles were reversed on the second Devils goal, as Croce sent a pass to Nieto, who blasted a shot from the corner and into the net. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Paulino was tested shortly after that but was able to stifle the shot attempt. The hosts put a little pressure on the FDU, taking a pair of corner kicks. They were unable to capitalize, and the Devils lead swelled to three in the 30th minute. Junior Brianna Cucinelli rifled a shot from outside the box that eluded the goalie, as freshman Carly Santucci earned the assist.

Paulino made another save in the 33rd minute, and junior Madeline Finnegan had a shot hit the post in the 37th minute. Finnegan collected her own rebound and scored to push the Devils lead to four. The Devils capped off the first-half barrage with one final goal with 4:16 left. Finnegan dished a pass over to classmate Nathalia Gallo who fired a shot from the top of the box into the top corner of the goal.

FDU held a 13-4 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes, while the Valiants took the only two corner kicks.

The Devils continued to apply pressure, attempting five shots in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. Senior Nicolette Roberts padded the Devils lead in the 60th minute, dribbling down a majority of the field before finishing from just outside the box. Four minutes later, Roberts sent in a cross that Gallo finished for her second marker of the afternoon.

Gallo nearly added to the lead 90 seconds later, but her attempt grazed the post. As the game moved along, junior Erica Martins also rang a shot off the iron to keep at the score at 7-0. Junior Julia Bonaccorso netted the eighth Devils goal, as she converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. FDU capped off the scoring with an 86th-minute tally, as Croce recorded her second goal of the afternoon. Fellow junior Miranda Rosa notched the helper on the Croce tally.
