Women's Soccer Blanks New Paltz, 3-0

MADISON, N.J. (September 15, 2019) – The FDU women's soccer team blanked SUNY New Paltz on Sunday afternoon by the score of 3-0.

The Devils improve to 6-0-1 on the season, and the Hawks fall to 1-4-1.

Junior Madeline Finnegan had the first look of the contest at 7:00 when she launched off a shot that landed just wide. The Devils continued to attack, and at 21:00 took the early lead. Junior Tatiana Nieto found classmate Stephanie Corea off of a corner kick to give the Devils the 1-0 advantage. The Hawks offense began to penetrate, but they failed to execute as junior goaltender Ashley Paulino punched an attempt by the Hawks over the bar at 27:05.

On the ensuing possession, FDU facilitated past the Hawks defensive unit as freshman Francesca Escudero, and Finnegan fired off back-to-back shots on goal. The Hawks threatened after, but Paulino thwarted the attempt.

The Devils continued to make the Hawks defense work, as junior Madison Rosa got off a shot attempt that ended up high. Four minutes later at 37:38, another Devils player got off a shot as junior Amanda Croce had her attempt blocked by the Hawks defense.

With the half ticking away, the Devils made one final attempt to add to their lead, as junior Barbara Ferreira's effort was just high. Heading into the break, the Devils held a 10-3 shot advantage over the Hawks, as seven different Devils got off shot attempts.

The Devils opened the second half with the first scoring opportunity at 47:43, but the shot by Amanda Croce hit the post, missing just wide. At 50:39, sophomore Brianna Cucinelli's shot was steered away by the Hawks keeper. Three minutes later, the sophomore had another attempt come up short, as the Devils continued to move toward adding to their lead. At 65:10, the Devils did just that, as Pita executed off a long breakaway from a pass from Ferreira to give FDU the 2-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, Pita broke through the defense once again as she fired off a shot that was saved by the Hawks goalkeeper. At 72:10, FDU took advantage of a New Paltz handball in the box, as junior Erica Martins was successful on the penalty kick attempt as she extended the Devils lead to 3-0. The Devils prevented any other potential Hawks attempts on the day, as they held on for the shutout victory.
