MADISON, N.J. (September 11, 2019) – The FDU men's soccer lost a close matchup versus The College of New Jersey on Wednesday evening by the score of 5-4.
With the loss, the Devils fall to 1-2-1 on the season.
In the fourth minute of play, TCNJ capitalized on a penalty kick to get on the board early. Despite giving up the early score, FDU fought back by way of a sophomore Billy Farnan goal from junior Brandon McGregor that came at the 7:05 mark. Knotted up at one apiece, sophomore Tiernan Grey made his presence known as he came up with a save in the eighth minute.
A few minutes later, the Devils stifled another attempt by the Lions, as this time a blocked shot left TCNJ empty on their attempt. The Devils took advantage of the block as junior Ricky La Stella marched the length of the field and found McGregor to put the Devils ahead 2-1.
Soon after the Lions returned the favor as they tied the game back up at 2-2. With the first half clock ticking down, junior Jonathan Rodriguez put the Devils back on top as he scored off an assist from sophomore Michael Rosario. With just under two minutes remaining in the half, the score remained the same, as the Devils went into the halftime break up 3-2.
FDU was doubled up in shots 8-4 during the first half, while TCNJ took all seven corner kicks of the opening 45 minutes.
The Lions leveled the game in the 63rd minute to put the game at 3-3. TCNJ kept the momentum on their side as five minutes later they went on to take the 4-3 lead, and then two minutes later doubled their gap to take the 5-3 advantage. Trailing by their largest margin of the day, the Devils refused to go away quietly as a Grey save and a blocked shot, kept them within striking distance.
At 82:54, freshman Oliver Trujillo delivered on a penalty kick to lessen the lead to 5-4. Despite attempts to work the ball through the TCNJ defenders, the score would remain as the Devils fell to the visiting Lions.
