BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 15, 2019) – Senior
Caroline Pape of the FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team set a new school record with 13 points, but the Devils were upended host by Moravian College 18-17 Monday.
Pape broke the previous best of 11, set by
Courtney Rendinaro against Misericordia in the 2015 campaign. The Devils drop to 6-7 on the season, with Moravian moving to 10-4.
The host Greyhounds opened with the first four tallies of the game, spanning the first 6:08. Off a free-position attempt, Pape stopped the run with 22:22 left in the opening half. That goal propelled the Devils to the next three goals, with senior
Caitlyn Damon and Pape adding markers midway through the stanza.
Moravian notched three of the next four goals, but sophomore
Olivia Chaoush potted a Pape pass to bring the deficit down to two with just under six and a half minutes left in the first half. The two sides would combine to score three times over the final 2:48, with Pape having a hand in both. Pape scored the first goal, before handing out an assist on junior
Madison Wood's goal with 23 ticks left in the half.
The two sides were deadlocked with 15 shots each in the first 30 minutes of play, while also being level with 13 ground balls. Pape either scored or assisted on all seven tallies the Devils scored in the first period.
FDU evened the game 4:50 into the second half, as sophomore
Mia Michaelides registered a free-position goal. The tie lasted all of 33 seconds, as the hosts regained the lead. Senior
Kathleen Petrucelli once again tied the game, this time as Pape set her up for a goal. Moravian netted two of the next three goals before Pape countered with one of her own to cut the gap to one at 12-11.
The Greyhounds took control, scoring five times over the 3:37 to take a 17-11 lead. FDU didn't go away, as Pape netted consecutive tallies 1:24 apart to get the team within four. After a Greyhound free position goal, the Devils reeled off the next four, with Wood capping the run off with a goal off a successful clear.
Trailing by one with 3:23 remaining, the Devils hunted for the equalizing marker. Pape had an attempt sail wide, with Petrucelli having her free position shot with 40 seconds left snared by the goalkeeper. Damon was able to force a turnover and Wood had a chance from in front with 20 ticks left. The goalie smothered the shot, and the clock ran out as Moravian was able to prevail.
