Men's Tennis Tops Rutgers-Newark, Western Connecticut

NEWARK, N.J./DANBURY, Conn. (March 29, 2019) - The FDU-Florham men's tennis team picked up 6-3 victories over Rutgers University-Newark and Western Connecticut State University Friday.

The Devils improve to 6-3 on the season.

FDU-Florham 6, Rutgers-Newark 3
FDU was dominant in doubles action, winning all three flights. Junior Kevin Weller and senior Rich Bennett cruised to an 8-2 triumph at the top of the lineup, while junior Chris Fiorenza and freshman JT Murray won 8-5 at No. 2. In the closest doubles match, sophomore Tyler Schacher teamed with rookie Michael LaNeve to earn a hard-fought 8-6 win.

Weller breezed through his singles action, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Freshman John Bricker earned a straight win at No. 3, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Murray notched his second victory at No. 4 singles, registering a 6-0, 6-1 win. Bennett and LaNeve battled in their matches at No. 1 and No. 5 singles but fell in three sets.

Bennett and Weller made it 2-for-2 in doubles play with an 8-4 win against West. Conn. Freshman CJ Milano and senior Brendon Urbano needed a tiebreaker, but notched an 8-7 (7-1) at the No. 3 flight. For Milano, it was his first collegiate victory.

For the second time in singles play on the day, Bennett needed a third set to decide a winner. He won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second by the identical score. The senior battled in the third, winning 10-6.  Bricker won another singles match, registering a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Murray also was a two-time winner in singles play, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 flight. Fiorenza and LaNeve closed out the victory with wins at the bottom of the lineup. Fiorenza won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, with LaNeve winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

UP NEXT
The Devils will host Wilkes University at 11 a.m. tomorrow before welcoming Penn State University-Abington at 5 p.m.
