MISENHEIMER, N.C. (March 13, 2019) - The FDU-Florham softball team dropped a pair of contests against Pfeiffer University Wednesday afternoon.
GAME 1: Pfeiffer 7, FDU-Florham 0
The Devils threatened in the first inning, with junior
Gabby Young walking and sophomore
Francesca Shipe singling to center with one out. Neither runner was able to score, and the host Falcons took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat. Back-to-back doubles brought home the first run, with an infield single plating the second.
The lead doubled in the second, as the No. 2 hitter in the order hit a home run down the left field line to make it a 4-0 ball game. Freshman
Ciara Hoffman retired the side in the third, and the Devils were able to put two runners on base in the fourth. With two outs, sophomores
Nicole Casale and
Dani Sames each singled, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Sophomore
Taylor Tobey singled with one down in the fifth and Shipe went up the middle with a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Pfeiffer notched the third and final out on a fielder's choice to keep the Devils off the scoreboard. The Falcons closed out the scoring in the sixth scoring three times on five hits.
GAME 2: Pfeiffer 8, FDU-Florham 6
FDU scored two in runs in each of the first three frames to jump out to a 6-3 edge. They needed only one hit in the first to score the pair, as Tobey led off with a double and Young walked. They moved up a base on a passed ball before Tobey scampered home on a throwing error. Shipe added an RBI groundout to account for the second first-inning tally.
Sames led off the second with an opposite-field double and came around to score on a fielder's choice by junior
Tara Morash. Morash advanced all the way to third thanks to a throwing error and would touch home when classmate
Annamarie Santangelo rapped a single to right. The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the second, connecting on a three-run home run.
Senior
Courtney Rohde led off the third with a single before moving into scoring position on a hit from Casale. Sames brought in Rohde with a single before scooting to second on the throw home. Morash worked a walk before Santangelo had another RBI hit, her second in as many innings, to stretch the FDU lead to 6-3.
