Women's Lacrosse Clipped by Sewanee 9-7

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 11, 2019) – Seniors Caitlyn Damon and Caroline Pape combined for five goals, but the FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team was clipped by Sewanee: The University of the South 9-7 Monday.

The Devils are now 1-1 on the season, with Sewanee improving to 7-2.

After a scoreless 4:42, the Tigers broke through with the first goal of the night. The Devils answered back 11 seconds later, with Damon converting a Pape pass. FDU took the lead with seven minutes later, as junior Aliyha Elk hit senior Kathleen Petrucelli for the goal. After the Sewanee pulled level at two, FDU reeled off the next three, with Pape netting two during the run.

The hosts recorded the next two goals before Pape completed the hat trick with 5:42 left in the opening half. Neither side was able to score the rest of the half, but senior Megan Nemeth made two saves late as the Devils went into the half up two.

FDU held an 18-12 edge in shots while also picking up three more ground balls than the Tigers.

The teams traded goals opening the second half, with sophomore Mia Michaelides netting the Devils goal. The Tigers closed out by scoring the game's final four goals, including the final tally with 8:52 left in the game. FDU took a pair of shots late in the game to try and find the tying goals but were stopped by the Sewanee goalkeeper.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•    Pape led the way with five points and matched Petrucelli with seven shots. The senior also added a team-high six draw controls.
•    Michaelides and sophomore Nina Shirey tied Pape with two caused turnovers.
•    Nemeth made nine stops in the setback.

UP NEXT
The Devils remain in Tennessee and will play Rhodes College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
