Women's Basketball Topped by Delaware Valley

Ishmael Scores Career-High 14 Points in Setback

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (February 9, 2019) – Freshman Helen Ishmael tallied a career-best 14 points, but the FDU-Florham women's basketball team was topped by Delaware Valley 94-64 Saturday afternoon.

FDU falls to 7-16, 2-9 within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, as Delaware Valley improves to 10-13, 4-8 in the MAC Freedom.

Trailing by a slim 4-2 margin early in the first quarter, the Devils were able to reel off seven straight tallies, including a trey from junior Jennah Roman. The two sides traded the next few baskets before Ishmael converted a Cayla Staggers feed down low to give FDU a 15-14 lead. The Aggies would roll off seven straight of their own before the Devils rebounded with five consecutive points. Roman hit three from the charity stripe and after drawing a foul while shooting.

After the hosts closed the first quarter on an 8-3 run, Roman cut the gap to three with a triple 33 seconds in the second stanza. With 4:10 left in the period, senior Raven Dowling knocked off a jumper to even the game at 34 all. Ishmael converted four free throws late in the half sandwiched around an Aggies layup to send the Devils into the halftime trailing 42-40.

The Devils shot 48.3% from the field in the opening 20 minutes, with Roman hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The junior led all scorers with 15 points while playing all 20 minutes.

The Aggies broke the game open in the second half, putting up 52 points while committing just five turnovers. Delaware Valley tallied the first nine points of the third stanza before Ishmael stopped the run with a pair of free throws. The rookie and Roman each tallied layups midway through the frame to get within 15, but the hosts ended the period with seven of the final 10 points.

The Devils didn't give up, with senior Kayla Croswell converting the traditional three-point play, and Dowling canning a three with 6:30 left. FDU was unable to get any closer, as the Aggies finished the game on a 19-7 spurt.
