PURCHASE, N.Y. (February 13, 2019) - The FDU-Florham women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Manhattanville College with a 76-64 win on Wednesday evening.
FDU moved to 8-16 with the victory, 3-10 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, as the Valiants fell to 16-7, 7-6 in the conference.
The Devils began the game with a 13-2 run, limiting the Valiants to 1-of-12 shooting with five turnovers over the first eight minutes. Manhattanville was forced to call a thirty second timeout which worked, as the Valiants finished the quarter on a 4-2 rally to make the score 15-6 after one. Senior
Kayla Croswell led the Devils with six points, while junior
Cayla Staggers added four rebounds.
The teams continued to trade points to begin the second quarter until an 8-2 Valiant spurt made it 19-14 with 6:32 left in the second quarter but the Devils responded with a 10-0 run to push it to 29-14 with just over three minutes left in the quarter. After a thirty-second timeout, Manhattanville countered with six consecutive tallies after making back to back threes, but a Croswell layup put an end to the short Valiant run.
Senior
Raven Dowling added a layup in the final minute of the quarter to push the Devil lead 13. Manhattanville scored again before half to make it 34-22 heading into the break. Croswell led all scorers with 11 points while Dowling added 10 points, three assists, and three steals.
After trading baskets to begin the quarter, Manhattanville went on a 9-2 run to make it a five-point game with 8:06 left in the frame. The teams would again alternate baskets over the next three minutes until the Devils went on a 9-0 rally to make it 51-38. During the run, junior
Jennah Roman notched three points while Dowling and Croswell both had a layup and a free throw. The Valiants cut the lead to six at 51-45 with three minutes left in the third, however the Devils would close the stanza on a 10-4 run.
Staggers drilled a jumper to begin the fourth quarter extended the Devils lead to 63-49. Manhattanville closed to within 10 points at 68-58 but baskets by Staggers, Croswell, and Roman sealed the victory for the Devils.
