Andy Fleurantin knocked down seven three-pointers as the FDU-Florham men's basketball team knocked off Wilkes 80-77 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
In a pregame ceremony, the men's basketball team honored seniors
Tyler Christie,
Darren Davy,
Anthony Mitchell, and
Eric Ray for their contributions to the men's basketball program. The Devils end the season with a 7-18 record, including a 4-10 mark in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
Mitchell scored the first basket, and on the next Devil possession, Ray drilled a three to give the Devils an early 5-0 lead. The Devils held the lead until the Colonels hit four threes in a span of four minutes to make it a 17-14 game in favor of the visitors. The colonels would continue this run and grow their lead to 22-14 before Mitchell scored to get the Devils back to within six. However, the Devils responded with a 9-2 run of their own to make it 24-23 with 7:20 in the half. The rally was capped off by a three by sophomore
Shawn Smith, and junior
Kenneth LaRocca added four points.
FDU-Florham would level the game at 26, but a 4-0 Colonel run extended their lead to 30-26. Wilkes would extend their lead to seven in the half before the Devils hit two free throws to make it a five-point game at 35-30 with 1:22 remaining in the first half. Following a Colonel timeout, sophomore
Oliver Ortman hit a corner three to bring the Devils within two with 45 seconds on the clock. The Colonels answered with two free throws to make it 37-33 with 29 seconds on the clock but a three with a second on the clock by Fleurantin brought the Devils to within one at 37-36.
The Devils reclaimed the lead on their first possession of the second half when Ray hit a three to make it 39-37. After a pair of free throws tied the game, Christie scored his first basket of the evening on a deep three to give the Devils the 42-39 lead. The three started a 10-0 run for the Devils to make it 49-39 with 14:58 left in regulation. The spurt was capped by a step-back three by Fleurantin which result in Wilkes calling a full timeout. The Colonels responded with a 5-0 run to cut the Devils lead to 49-44. Fleurantin ended the Wilkes run with a three of his own to make it 52-44 with 12:39 on the clock. A quick 6-2 run by Wilkes made it a 54-50 game with 10:15 on the clock forcing the Devils to call a timeout. Coming out the timeout, Wilkes decided to full-court press the Devils. Smith broke the press, fed the ball to Fleurantin, who found an open LaRocca for the corner three. The three sparked an 11-0 run for the Devils, in which Fleurantin hit back to back threes to make it 65-50 with 8:49 remaining in regulation.
Wilkes cut the Devils led to single digits after a 15-2 run made it 67-64 with 4:51 left on the clock. A tough layup by Davy made it 69-64 with just over four minutes on the clock. With the score 71-64, Wilkes used a full timeout with 2:17 to regroup after a tough defensive possession from the Devils led by Christie's rejection. Following the timeout, Wilkes hit a layup, but the Fleurantin responded by hitting a three to make it 74-66. A quick 6-0 run by the Colonels made it a 74-72 game with 47 seconds on the clock.
The Devils added some cushion to their lead with a Davy layup, however Wilkes responded with a three to make it a 76-75 game with 25 seconds on the clock. After hitting two free throws late, Mitchell gave the Devils a 78-75 with 20 seconds on the clock. Wilkes was able to get a layup but after using 12 seconds off the game clock, leaving 8 seconds on the clock for the Devils who held a one-point lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Ray tied his career best with three assists while playing 21 minutes, the most in a game this season. The senior also hauled in five rebounds.
• Fleurantin went 7-of-10 from three, falling one triple shy of Ryan McPherson's school-record of eight set during the 2008-09 campaign. As a unit, the team season-best with 14 triples.
• Davy and Mitchell combined for 24 points, while Christie tallied seven.
• Smith recorded seven points, six assists and four rebounds.
• First win against Wilkes since the 2013-14 season.
• The Devils matched a season-high with 80 points, and have scored 80 on each of the last three Saturday's.
