Madison, NJ (December 9, 2019)- On a historic night from the three-point line, Men's Basketball defeated Hunter College on Monday night, 86-77. With the win, FDU improves to 4-5 while the Hawks drop to 1-7.
FIRST HALF
Junior
Shawn Smith and freshman
John Bennett got the scoring going for FDU, knocking down two threes to tie the game early, 6-6. The Hawks would score 13 of the games next 18 points to take a 19-11 lead with 12:37 remaining. Back and forth play kept Hunter ahead threw the first 10 minutes, leading 27-19 with 9:52 left in the half. FDU would get hot, scoring five straight points thanks to a three from senior
Andy Fleurantin and a two from freshman
Joseph Nigro. The Devils were down three, 27-24. The Hawks extended the lead to seven, 31-24 at the 7:59 mark before FDU took control. Seven three-point field goals down the stretch, led by junior
Oliver Ortman's five trey's, gave the Devils a 47-46 lead headed into the halftime break. Â
SECOND HALF
A tug-a-war battle ensued through the first two-minutes of play, before FDU went on a run. The Devils scored 12 straight points to push their lead to nine at 63-52 with 14:03 remaining. They would push their lead to as many as 12 with 13:04 left on another three-pointer, this time from Senior
Kenneth LaRocca. Fleurantin would knock down three threes' in the span of 53 seconds to extend the FDU lead to as many as 15 at the 8:21 mark, 80-65. Hunter wasn't done, answering with a 12-0 run themselves, making it 80-77 with :37 seconds remaining. Smith knocked down two free throws and Fleurantin knocked down four to secure the 86-77 Devils victory.
LEAD DEVIL
Fleurantin had a career night scoring 33 points on 9-of-13 (69%) from the field and 7-of-10 (70%) from three-point land. That is the most amount of points he has scored in an FDU uniform.
RECORD BREAKING
With 20 total three-pointers made, the Devils broke the single game record for three-pointers made in a game surpassing the previous total of 16.
HELPING THE SQUAD
Ortman finished the game with 19 points on 7-of-14 (50%) from the field and 5-of-9 (55%) from beyond the arc. Smith had 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists while LaRocca ended with 11 points, knocking down three threes.
