Newark, NJ (November 16, 2019) The FDU women's basketball team played its second game in two days, as they faced off against Arcadia University. The Devils fell to the Knights in a close contest, by a score of 69-64. The Devils are now 1-2 on the season, as the Knights improve to 1-2.
First Half
Following two made free throws from freshman
Jayda Bing, the Devils tied the score up at 2-2. A three-pointer from freshman
Nevaeh Sutton sparked the Devils first lead of the game, that would extend for the remainder of the quarter. Following a made layup by senior Jenna Roman with 52 seconds left, the Devils ended the first quarter with the 10-4 lead.
The Knights kicked off the second frame with a made field goal. FDU responded by way of a three-pointer from freshman
Angela Downey. The Knights began to gain steam in the quarter. Up 15-14, the Devils added to the Arcadia deficit, when Roman connected off the assist from Sutton, to put the lead at 18-14. Both teams continued to trade baskets, as Arcadia took the lead at 19-18. With only 29 seconds remaining until halftime, Roman stepped-up once more for FDU, as she nailed a three-point field goal, to send the Devils into the break, up 21-19.
Second Half
The Devils controlled the early portions of the third quarter, as Sutton drained a three-pointer. Roman continued to shine for FDU as she added both a three-pointer and a two-point field goal. The Knights gained offensive momentum and would not let down. In the fourth quarter it was the same. A fleury of big shots, along with stifling defense, helped Arcadia to hold on for the win.
The Leaders
Roman led the way for the Devils with 22 points. Roman also notched three three-pointers, and tallied three steals. Bing secured a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Sutton led the Devils with three steals, and also added 11 points.
All-Tournament
Senior
Jennah Roman finished as 1 of 5 players named to the All-Tournament team. She averaged 17.5 ppg while playing 37 minutes both nights.
From Coach
"We have to be consistent. To hold a team to 4 points in one quarter and then give up 25 in another, is not good enough," explained Head Coach
Melissa Brooks. "We have it in us to be a top defensive team. We just need to be consistent for all four quarters. Shots aren't falling right now, so defense has to keep us in games".
