Women's Basketball Beats Rutgers-Newark in Overtime, 62-57

Madison, NJ (November 13, 2019)- The FDU Women's basketball team opened it's 2019-2020 campaign at home in the Ferguson Recreation Center with a 62-57 overtime win against Rutgers-Newark University. The Devils are now 1-0 on the season while Rutgers-Newark falls to 0-1.

The Scarlett Raiders got the first quarter started by scoring 9 of the games first 14 points. Rutgers-Newark was paced by Sophomore Dorian Capurso, who led the attack with seven of the teams first nine points coming via free throws and a three-point basket. FDU would have the response, scoring four straight points on field goals by Senior Jennah Roman and Freshmen Jayda Bing. The remainder of the quarter would be back and forth, with Rutgers-Newark ending the first with a 14-13 lead.

It would remain a one-point game midway through the second quarter, with each team going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 19-18 RNU. FDU finally regained the lead when Freshmen Angela Downey knocked down a three, putting the Devils ahead 21-20. FDU would push their lead to 23-20 thanks to Freshmen Nevaeh Suttons bucket late in the second quarter. The Scarlett Raiders quickly regained the lead with a 6-0 run, heading into the halftime break up 32-25.

In the third quarter, Rutgers-Newark extended their lead to as much as seven. FDU responded, raddling of five straight points to bring the game within two, led by Sophomore's Arian Coleman and Helen Ishmael. RNU would outscore the Devils 9-3 down the stretch and ended the third quarter up 43-35.

Roman hit a three to start the fourth quarter, Bing hit two free throws and a field goal, and the Devils were down 45-43. After the teams traded buckets, FDU was down 51-49 and with :07 seconds on the clock, Sutton stepped up for two free throw to tie the game, she nailed them both.

The game would enter the overtime period tied 51-51. After a quick bucket to start the extra period by Rutgers-Newark, the Devils would dominate the rest of the game, outscoring the Scarlett Knights 11-4. Bing hit the go ahead bucket with 2:48 remaining in the frame, added a three-point play one minute later and Ramon chipped in with a basket, adding to the FDU lead. The Devils would seal the season opening victory 62-57.

LEAD DEVIL
Bing paced all Devils finishing with 21 points and 6 rebounds on 7-12 from the field and 6-7 from the charity stripe.

DISHING THE ROCK
Roman not only chipped in 14 points on 6-16 shooting, but she led FDU with five assists in the contest.

LATE GAME MAGIC
Through the first three quarters of play, the devils shot 32.5% from the field, in the fourth quarter and overtime, they shot at a 45% clip and outscored their opponent 27-14.

FDU plays back to back road contests on Friday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. against Wesleyan University and Saturday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m. against Arcadia University.
