JERSEY CITY, NJ. (October 26, 2019) - The FDU volleyball team fell to Maritime College and New Jersey City University on Saturday in a tri-match.
The Devils are now 8-16 on the season.
Maritime College 3, FDU-Florham 1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16)
The Privateers jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first set. The Devils responded by going on a 9-0 run of their own. During the rally, the Devils received kills from senior Nathalia Padron and freshman Ana Teixeira. Maritime then stringed together five points to take an 11-9 lead. Now trailing 17-16, The Devils went on a 3-0 run to regain the lead, 19-17. Junior Jessica Garreffa highlighted the run with a kill. The Devils held on to the lead for the remainder of the set, using kills from junior Liz Moise and three kills from freshman Sophia Miskulin.
In the second set, Garreffa led the Devils with five kills. The Devils jumped out to an early 9-7 lead, as Mikulin registered a kill. Maritime would quickly regain the edge using a pair of kills. The set remained a back-and-forth one, as Moise added a kill to cut the Maritime lead to 21-20. The Privateers would pull away and take the set victory.
Garreffa and Padron tallied kills to start the third set, giving the Devils the advantage. Maritime continued to attack, as they regained the lead. Trailing 8-7, freshman Marilyn Torres garnered a kill, to tie the game at 8-8. Maritime took the lead back and would not relinquish it. Fighting from behind, Garreffa tallied three kills, as sophomore Stephanie Barbosa also chipped in with a kill. The Privateers were the first to 25 points, as they took the set win.
The Devils began the fourth set with another string of kills. Padron tallied three of the Devils' first four kills, as Barbosa added the other one. Maritime, however, took the 5-4 lead and would not look back as they clinched the set and match win.
New Jersey City University 3, FDU-Florham 1 (25-19, 25-23, 21-25,25-16)
The Devils opened up competition against NJCU with a pair of kills from Garreffa, and one kill apiece from Moise and Torres. Trailing 13-9, a kill from Miskulin spearheaded an FDU run, which helped them retake the lead. Despite two more kills from Garreffa and one from Moise, NJCU would storm back to take the set win.
In the second set, Moise recorded an early kill off an assist from sophomore Kesha Patel. Down 12-11, the Devils used a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Garreffa began the series with a kill off a pass from freshman Megan Walsh. The Devils continued to run with a few NJCU errors. The Gothic Knights retook the lead, and wouldn't look back, as they escaped with the set win.
Trailing two sets to zero, FDU would not go away quietly. The Devils began the third set with a 5-0 run. Padron led the run with two kills, as Garreffa and Moise both added one kill apiece. Now leading 14-12, the Devils began 5-0 spurt, which consisted of all kills. Padron added three kills, as Moise and Garreffa added one. Patel assisted all five kills. The Devils continued to apply pressure offensively, as they secured the set win.
In the fourth set, the Gothic Knights had the momentum from start to finish. Three kills from Garreffa and Padron were not enough, as NJCU held on to win the set and the match.

- The FDU won the margin in blocks against Maritime, 6-1.
- Patel had a single-game career-high in assists against NJCU, with 26.
