Erika Pita and junior
Madeline Finnegan netted second-half goals to send the FDU women's soccer team past Delaware Valley University 2-0 Wednesday.
FDU moves to 11-5-1, 1-4-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom while Delaware Valley falls to 1-12-1, 0-5-0 in the MAC Freedom.
The Devils had a majority of the chances in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to push a goal across. In the ninth minute, senior
Dari Lyons slipped a pass through to Pita, but the Aggies keeper stopped her attempt. Junior
Tatiana Nieto had an opportunity in the 18th minute as her shot narrowly was wide.
FDU had their best opportunity in the 26th minute, as Nieto moved down the left side, and her attempt glance off the crossbar. Nieto and classmate
Amanda Croce each recorded shots on goal towards the end of the period, but were unable to find the goal to break 0-0 affair.
The Devils held a commanding 14-1 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes and attempted a pair of corner kicks.
Junior
Erica Martins and Pita had shots denied by the Aggies goalkeeper early in the second half, but the Devils were able to break the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Croce sprung Pita on a breakaway and slotted her shot just inside the far post to give FDU the 1-0 advantage. The host Devils doubled their lead in the 69th minute, as Finnegan pounced on a blocked shot. The carom came right to Finnegan, who tallied her seventh marker of the season.
Staked to the lead, the Devils defense clamped down. They didn't allow a shot in the second half and limited possession in the defensive third of the field. Junior Briana Cucinelli nearly added to the Devils margin in the 78th minute, but her shot just sailed high. Junior
Nathalia Gallo had FDU's final shot, a shot in the 88th that went wide.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Pita netted her team-high 14th goal of the season. With her tally, she moves into a tie for third place on the single-season goals list, joining Ashleigh Hoey, who had 14 in 2002.
- The Devils out-shot Delaware Valley 27-1. It is the fewest shots the Devils have allowed in a game this season.
- Mullins recorded her first collegiate point with the helper on Finnegan's goal.
