Women's Soccer Falls in Overtime to No. 20 Stevens, 1-0

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 15, 2019) – The FDU women's soccer team battled hard but fell in overtime 1-0 to No. 20 Stevens Institute of the Technology Tuesday evening.

FDU falls to 10-4-1, 0-3-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom while Stevens improves to 8-3-1, 3-0-0 in the MAC Freedom.

Rookie Brianna Branagan, who was making just her second career start, was tested early. Branagan faced four shots in the opening eight minutes, but the Ducks were unable to score. FDU had consecutive corner kicks in the 12th minute; however, each effort failed to result in a shot. The Devils finally put a shot towards goal in the 34th minute, as junior Erica Martins had her attempt stopped by the goalkeeper.

Branagan made two stops late in the opening stanza before junior Tatiana Nieto had her shot snared by the Ducks keeper with 17 ticks left in the first half. Stevens held an 11-3 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes, but the two sides were level with two corner kicks each.

The freshman goalkeeper kept the Devils in the game, making three big stops early in the second stanza. Branagan was aided by defender Carlie Mullins, who cleared a pair of balls off the line in the 66th. Mullins stopped a headed attempt off a corner before deflecting the follow-up shot out to keep the game deadlocked at zero.

The Devils faced everything Stevens threw at them, fending off 15 shots in the second half without breaking down. Neither side had a shot on goal over the final 10 minutes of regulation, and the two teams entered overtime. The Ducks finally broke through with 32 seconds left in the first overtime, claiming the 1-0 victory.
