WELLESLEY, Mass. (October 12, 2019) – The FDU volleyball team dropped matches to Worcester State University and Wellesley College Saturday.
FDU is now 6-11 on the season.
WORCESTER STATE 3, FDU-Florham 1 (25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19)
FDU fell into a big hole in the opening set, surrendering 11 of the first 12 points. The team managed to close, using a 3-0 run to get within seven at 22-15. They were unable to get any closer, as an attack error handed set one to the Lancers. The second stanza saw several ties before Worcester pulled in front for good with a 5-0 spurt. The Devils got back to within 14-12 on back-to-back kills from junior Liz Moise. WSU closed out the frame with five straight points to build a 2-0 edge.
A 7-1 rally in the third set, capped off with an ace from senior Nathalia Padron, pushed the Devils in front 10-4. The Lancers battled back and pulled level at 12, but junior Jessica Garreffa served up consecutive aces during a 5-1 spurt to retake the lead. WSU regained an edge at 21-19, but four straight FDU markers pushed the set back towards FDU's favor. Moise slammed home a pair of the kills to polish off the third frame and cut the deficit in half to 2-1.
The Devils hoped to continue the momentum in the fourth stanza but were unable to force a fifth and deciding set. A poor set from the Lancers brought the score to 15-12, and the Devils rode the momentum to pull level at 16 courtesy of consecutive kills from Padron. The Lancers finished off the match with four of the final five points to claim the match victory.
WELLESLEY 3, FDU-Florham 0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-10)
FDU once again fell behind early, giving up 13 of the first 16 markers. A 5-0 spurt by the Blue extended the lead to 14, and Devils gave five of the final six points to hand set one to the hosts. The Devils used an unforced attack error to close the second set gap to three at 10-7; however, a mid-set 8-1 run pushed the deficit into double-digits. Padron and Moise each recorded kills to get FDU as close as nine, but they were unable to get any closer.
A Garreffa kill shrunk the Blue lead to 5-3, but the hosts responded with eight straight tallies to take a 10 point lead. FDU got as close as seven before Wellesley ended the match with four straight, including two consecutive kills.
