Staggers, Dowling Score in Double Figures in Setback

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (January 30, 2019) - Senior Raven Dowling and junior Cayla Staggers each scored in double figures, but the FDU-Florham women's basketball team was topped by DeSales University 87-41 Wednesday evening.

The Devils fall to 7-13, 2-7 within the Middle Atlantic Conference while the Bulldogs remain unblemished in the conference at 9-0. DeSales is currently 18-2 on the season.

Junior Jennah Roman gave the Devils an early 3-2 edge after converting from the charity stripe, but the Bulldogs responded with eight straight. Staggers ended the rally with a layup from freshman Arian Coleman; however DeSales pulled in front more courtesy of a 10-0 spurt. With just six seconds remaining in the frame, Dowling knocked down a jumper to cut the deficit to 13 at 22-9.

The Bulldogs opened the second with nine straight tallies before Staggers hit a jumper in the paint. Staggers and Dowling combined to notch five consecutive points midway through the second half, but DeSales was able to score the final three points of the stanza. FDU cut their turnovers in half in the second quarter, committing just five.

Dowling put the Devils on the board in the third, as she knocked down a triple just 47 seconds into the period. The senior hit a pair from the free throw line midway through the period, yet were able to end the frame on a 17-4 rally. FDU kept the ball under control in the second 20 minutes, turning the ball over just six times. The Devils were able to force four turnovers in the final 10 minutes while committing only two of their own.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Staggers led the team with 16 points while pulling down a team-best seven rebounds.
  • Dowling tallied 15 points while hitting a pair of treys. The senior also notched two steals and two assists.
  • Coleman made her first collegiate start, pulling down three rebounds and dishing out three assists.
  • Rookie Helen Ishmael chipped in four points and six rebounds.
