MADISON, N.J. (September 21, 2018) - A seventh minute goal by senior
Chrissy Penney led the FDU-Florham field hockey team to a 1-0 trimuph over DeSales Friday evening.
With the victory, the Devils improve to 8-1 overall, and are 1-0 within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. DeSales slips to 2-5, 0-1 in the MAC Freedom.
FDU nearly broke through just 1:09 into the game, but a shot by senior
Kelly O'Neill was kicked away by the DeSales goalie. Penney put the Devils into the lead 6:20 later, as junior
Jessica Pietracatella deflected pass to the senior. Penney pushed the ball into the goal for her third tally of the season.
The Devils backline did not allow the Bulldogs to set up in the offensive end for most of the first half. Senior
Makayla Pak was active with her stick, breaking up key passes and dribbling around defender. DeSales didn't muster a shot until there was 1:30 left in the half, but the shot went wide.
Senior
Brooke Sherwin had the Devils first chance of the second half, but her blast off of a corner try was stopped by DeSales' Katarina Polyviou. The Bulldogs gained serious momentum in the second half, taking shots in the 53rd and 54th minute. Both attempts were stopped by senior
Samantha Rubin however. Those two shots were the only two that reached goal this game for DeSales.
Sherwin led the way with four shots, including two on goal. Rubin notched the two saves in her eighth victory of the season, and her second consecutive shutout.
FDU is back in action on Monday evening, taking on No. 9 Montclair State at 7 p.m.
