Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to No. 7 TCNJ, 1-0

EWING, N.J. (September 19, 2018) - A goal in the 86th minute was the difference as the FDU-Florham women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to No. 7 The College of New Jersey Wednesday night.

The Lions improve to 4-1-0 on the season, as the Devils suffered their first defeat of the season. FDU now stands at 6-1-1 following the setback.

TCNJ took the first five shots of the night, with sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Paulino making a save on the fifth one. The Devils lone scoring opportunity came in the 18th minute. Sophomore Tatiana Nieto sent in a corner kick that found the head of junior Lindsey Scarmozzino. Scarmozzino put the header attempt just wide.

Paulino had to make another key saves late in the first half. After a corner kick by the Lions and ensuing went wide, the hosts continued to pressure. Jess Hall took a shot that Paulino stopped with 2:21 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Lions held an 11-1 edge in shots during the first half, but the teams were even with one corner kick each.

Neither side could go much in the beginning stages of the second half, with TCNJ putting three shots that were not on target over the first 25 minutes. The Lions nearly broke through in the 73rd minute, but a header just went wide. TCNJ finally got the opening goal with just 4:37 left in the game, as Alexa Pestritto took a pass from Julia Obst and fired a shot from the center of the box past Paulino.

The sophomore Paulino made three saves for the Devils, who were out-shot 19-1 on the evening.

FDU returns to action Sunday, heading to Patchogue, N.Y. for a 1 p.m. game against St. Joseph's-Long Island.
