ST. DAVID'S, PA. (April 8, 2018) - The FDU softball team slugged five home runs as the team topped Eastern 9-0 and 12-2 Sunday afternoon.
The Devils are now 10-12 on the season, including a 5-3 mark in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
GAME 1: FDU-Florham 9, Eastern 0 (5 innings)
The Devils drew first blood, scoring in their first at bat. Sophomore
Gabby Young singled and moved to second on an error. After moving up on a flyout, Young scored on a wild pitch. The pitching duo of freshman
Abbey Scarengelli and sophomore
Megan Zaccario were brilliant, allowing just three baserunners.
FDU added to their lead in the second as senior
Michelle Mangini blasted a home run down the left field line. The team doubled the lead in the third with a two-out rally. Senior
Taylor Torre singled down through the left side and the cleanup hitter
Rebecca DeCarlo sent a ball over the center field fence for a two-run homer.
The Devils took advantage of four errors in the fourth while also collecting four hits as they tallied five runs. Sophomore
Tara Morash had a bunt single that brought in a run, while freshman
Taylor Tobey knocked in a pair with a base knock in left. Torre capped the scoring in game one with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Tobey.
Each starter had exactly one hit in the contest with Mangini and Young scoring twice.
GAME 2: FDU-Florham 12, Eastern 2 (5 innings)
The Devils once again wasted no time, scoring three times in the first. After Young singled to lead off, Torre homered to left field. The next hitter was DeCarlo, and she mashed her second home run of the day.
FDU tacked on five more in the second, with Tobey delivering a one-out RBI single to start the rally.Torre was hit with a pitch, and DeCarlo drove Tobey home with a double to center. With the bases loaded, Mangini knocked in a pair with a double to dead-center. Freshman
Francesca Shipe closed out the inning with an RBI groundout.
The guests concluded the scoring in the third, adding four final runs. Morash and Tobey singled before Torre brought both home with a home run to deep center field. Four batters later, Shipe singled in junior
Courtney Rohde to give FDU a 12-0 lead.
The Eagles scored their first two runs in the third inning, ending the scoreless drought. Freshman
Linda Rizzo buckled down and didn't allow a run over the final two innings, helping FDU earn the sweep.
The senior Torre collected her 150th career hit in the game, moving within one of entering the top-5 in program history. DeCarlo went 4-for-4 as Rizzo worked the complete game, allowing just five hits.
FDU is back in action Wednesday, taking on Drew at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader.
