MADISON, N.J. (April 11, 2018) - The FDU softball team reached the .500 mark with an 8-2 and 10-2 sweep of Drew University Wednesday.
The Devils are now 12-12 on the season with victories.
GAME 1: FDU-Florham 8, Drew 2
The teams traded runs in the first inning, as a two-out double from senior
Rebecca DeCarlo gave FDU the brief 1-0 lead. Both sides settled down, as no one could break through for the next three frames.
The Devils exploded for three runs in the fourth inning. Senior
Taylor Torre led off the frame with solo home run to left. With two outs and a runner on first, freshman
Francesca Shipe delivered her first career home run, a two-run shot to left.
FDU tacked on four additional runs in the fifth. The first two hitters reached base before Torre doubled in sophomores
Gabby Young and
Tara Morash. DeCarlo drove in Torre with a single to left. Senior
Michelle Mangini capped off the scoring with another single, this time knocking in DeCarlo.
Drew scored once in the seventh, but the damage had already been done.
Freshman
Kaleigh Oplinger earned the win, throwing six innings with three strikeouts. Torre and DeCarlo combined to go 6-for-8 with five RBI's and four runs scored.
GAME 2: FDU-Florham 10, Drew 2
The Rangers scored in their first at-bat, plating a run on a passed ball. Morash gave the Devils the lead for good in the second, as her single combined with an error allowed Shipe and Mangini to score.
With two outs in the third and runners on first and second, Mangini and Shipe went back-to-back with singles to give FDU a 4-1 lead. The Devils stretched their lead in the fourth with three tallies, as freshman
Taylor Tobey brought in a pair with a triple to center field.
Drew stopped the Devils run-scoring in the sixth by scoring on an error, but FDU closed out the scoring with three runs in the seventh. Senior

Dani Sames singled with one out, and freshman
Nicole Casale singled up the middle, scoring both. Freshman
Alex Steele collected her first career RBI, as she ripped a double to center, while freshman
Sydney Fehnel singled up the middle in her first at-bat of the year.
Tobey had three hits, while Mangini and Shipe had two apiece. On the mound, freshman
Linda Rizzo earned win, throwing five innings with two strikeouts, allowing just one unearned tally.
FDU is back in action Saturday, heading out to King's for a Middle Atlantic Conference doubleheader.
