MADISON, N.J. (April 7, 2018) - Sophomore
Annamarie Santangelo scored on a wild pitch to help the FDU softball team earn a split against Delaware Valley Saturday afternoon.
Delaware Valley took the first game 2-1 while FDU won the second 5-4 in eight innings. With the split, FDU is 8-12 overall and 3-3 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
GAME 1: Delaware Valley 2, FDU 1
The Aggies put runners on second and third in the second and capitalized with a double to center which scored one run. Freshman
Abbey Scarengelli settled down, striking the next two hitters out and getting a groundout to end the threat.
FDU threatened in the third, as senior
Frannie Jarin doubled to the wall in center and freshman
Taylor Tobey bunted her way on with a single. Tobey swiped second to get in scoring position, but was unable to get knocked in.
The Devils once again had second and third with one down, this time in the sixth. Senior
Taylor Torre singled off the third base bag and moved to third on a single by junior
Courtney Rohde. Rohde swiped second, but the next two hitters were retired in order.
Delaware Valley doubled their lead in the seventh with an RBI single, but freshman
Linda Rizzo got the next two hitters out to end the frame.
FDU broke through in their final at bat. After the first two hitters were out, sophomore
Gabby Young reached on an error and scored on a Tobey double. With the tying run at second, the Aggies escaped with a the victory by getting a pop-up to end the game.
Tobey and Torre each had two hits, while Scarengelli fanned six in 6 1/3 innings,
GAME 2: FDU 5, Delaware Valley 4 (8 innings)
Delaware Valley did all their damage in the third, taking advantage of two Devils errors en route to a four run frame. The big blow was a bases-clearing double from Jamie Stefani.
FDU chipped away at the lead, scoring a once in the home fourth. Tobey led off with a bunt single and moved to third on a steal and a fly-out. The rookie came home when a throw back to the mound went awry. The Devils continued to threaten as Rohde and
Michelle Mangini singled with two down, but couldn't push a run across.
The Devils tied the game in the fifth, scratching across three runs. Jarin led off with a walk and scored on a single to left from sophomore
Tara Morash. After moving to second, Morash scored on a botched pop-up to the left fielder that Tobey hit. Tobey scored to complete the comeback when
Rebecca DeCarlo's grounder up the middle was misplayed.
Neither side scored over the next two innings, but the Devils loaded the bases. Young worked a walk and Tobey slapped a single that just touched inside the left field line. After two straight outs, Rohde reached on an error to load the bags up. The Aggies escaped with a pop-up to the catcher.
Rizzo got the team through the eighth, giving FDU a chance for a walk-off. Pinch-hitter
Francesca Shipe worked an eight pitch walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jarin. Santangelo was then brought in to run, and moved to third on an infield hit from Young. With Tobey digging in, Stefani threw a wild pitch. allowing Santangelo to score without a throw to set off the celebration.
Tobey and Rohde each had two hits, while Tobey scored twice. Rizzo earned her second win of the season, throwing 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out five.
The Devils continue conference play tomorrow, heading to Eastern for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
