Mangini Notches 100th Career Hit on Senior Day

MADISON, N.J. (April 28, 2018) - Senior Michelle Mangini collected her 100th career hit as the FDU softball team split with Misericordia Saturday.

The Devils won the first game 2-1 before droppin the second 10-9 in 10 innings. FDU finished the regular season 19-17, and 8-6 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.

GAME 1: FDU-Florham 2,  Misericordia 1
The Cougars grabbed the first lead of the game, taking a 1-0 lead after an RBI groundout. Freshman Linda Rizzo was brilliant the rest of the way, allowing just two more hits over the final six innings. Rizzo retired nine straight hitters before Brianna Holder doubled with one out in the fourth inning.

The Devils took the lead in the fourth and never looked back. Senior Taylor Torre led off with a single while Rebecca DeCarlo worked a walk after a nine-pitch at bat. Junior Courtney Rohde dumped a single into right center, before Mangini singled through the left side to load the bases. Freshman Francesca Shipe fouled out, but the ball was hit deep enough to score DeCarlo, putting FDU up 2-1.

Rizzo ran into trouble in the sixth, as Ciara DeLong reached on a single with one down, and moved to second on an error. The Devils trapped DeLong in a rundown on a ground-ball, getting the 5-4-6-3 tag out. The rookie buckled down and retired the final five hitters, ending the game. Torre made the final out, snaring a line drive as she dropped to one knee.

Torre and Rohde each had two hits, as Rizzo fanned two in the complete game.

GAME 2: Misericordia 10, FDU-Florham 9 (10 innings)
After a pitcher's duel in game one, game two was the complete opposite. Both teams scored in the first, with Torre homering to right center with a 1-0 count. Misericordia took a 3-1 lead after three, as Holder answered Torre's home-run with a two-run shot with left center.

The Devils leveled the game in the fourth, as Torre started the rally with a single. After Rohde reached on a fielder's choice, Mangini slapped a single to left to even things at two.

FDU exploded for four runs in the fifth. Sophomore Gabby Young and freshman Taylor Tobey reached on errors with one down, and a walk to Torre loaded the bases. DeCarlo reached on a run-scoring fielder's choice, and Rohde had the big hit, a two-run single to left center.

The Cougars regained the lead in the sixth, with Maddie Holub delivering a three-run home run to put the guests back up 7-6. Misericordia added an additional run in the seventh, as a Lori Brennan single plated a run.

With the Devils down to their final at-bat, Torre was intentionally walked to lead-off. After a fielder's choice, Rohde doubled home DeCarlo, while Mangini singled to center to even things back up. That single was the 100th of Mangini's career. With a runner on second, FDU was unable to push the winning score across the plate.

The eighth and ninth innings went by without a run, forcing the international tie-breaker come into play. After the runner who was placed on second moved to third on a wild pitch, the next two hitters grounded out. Rizzo delivered another wild pitch, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The next batter, Amanda Butera, homered to right, giving Misericordia the 10-8 lead.

Sophomore Annamarie Santangelo put the Devils down only a run, as she drove in Shipe with a single up the middle. After moving to second, Santangelo was left stranded as a strikeout ended the game.

Rohde and Mangini combined for five hits and five RBI's, while Torre had two hits with three runs scored.
