Softball Topped by Pfeiffer in ECAC First Round 2-1

MADISON, N.J. (May 9, 2018) - The FDU softball team was tripped up by Pfeiffer University 2-1 in the ECAC Tournament First Round Wednesday afternoon.

The Devils end their season with a 19-18 record, while Pfeiffer moves to 36-5. The Falcons will meet the winner of Penn State-Behrend and Alvernia Saturday afternoon.

Playing as a guest on their home field, FDU strung together a run in their first at bat. Sophomore Gabby Young led off with a 10 pitch at bat before working a walk. The speedster stole second, and two batters later senior Taylor Torre chopped a ball up the middle which plated Young.

Freshman Linda Rizzo put runners on base in each of the first two frames, but was able to escape without harm each time. After a perfect third, the Falcons knotted the game. Pitcher Kiana Millsaps doubled with one out and moved to third on a single by Kari Westerbeek. Millsaps would score on a fielder's choice by Bailey Sherrill to tie things up.

Millsaps struck out the side in the fifth and Pfeiffer threatened in the home fifth. After a one out walk, senior Michelle Mangini caught the runner leaning and gunned her out before she could slide back in. Freshman Taylor Tobey dunked a single into left to lead off the sixth, but only advanced as far as second before the side was retired.

Freshman Francesca Shipe bounced a one-out single up the middle in the seventh, but the Falcons turned a double-play to end the threat. In the bottom of the stanza, Bailey Sherrill was hit by a pitch and moved to second a sac bunt. After a single to left put runners on the corners, pinch-hitter Sydney Bowles singled off Rizzo's glove to score the winning run.

Rizzo fanned four in 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
