DALLAS, PA. (April 28, 2018) - The FDU baseball team fell 8-4 and 11-4 to Misericordia Saturday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 10-25 overall and 3-17 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. FDU and Misericordia will meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the final game of the three-game series.
GAME 1: Misericordia 8, FDU-Florham 4
The Devils gave up the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, as Tyler Holzapfel doubled in a run to left-center. Senior
Kenny Carrier ran into trouble to second as the first two hitters reached base. The senior got the final three outs with allowing a run.
FDU grabbed a lead in the fourth, as junior
Ian Havran singled and moved to third on a single from senior
Reynaldo Diaz. Classmate
Christopher Franco lined out to center, but Havran was able to tag up and score. After moving to second on a balk, Diaz came around to score on a single by
AJ Yurista.
Staked to the lead, Carrier worked around a two out double in the fourth, but the Cougars took the lead back int eh fifth. With the bases loaded, FDU brought in
Kevin Brown who got a fly ball but the runner tagged up and scored to even the game. A wild pitch and a double to left field knocked home two more, putting the hosts up 4-2 after five.
FDU evened the score in the sixth, starting with a leadoff walk to freshman Jake Moscowitz. Diaz came up and slugged an 0-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for a home run. The Devils continued the pressure, putting runners on second and third with one out. Misericordia ended the inning getting the final two outs.
The Cougars didn't waste anytime, taking the lead back for good in the sixth. After loading the bases with one out, Santo Guinta delivered a back-breaking three-run double to center. The hosts added one final run to cap the scoring.
Diaz and Yursita each went 2-for-3, as Diaz knocked in two runs and scored twice.
GAME 2: Misericordia 11, FDU-Florham 4
After a scoreless first inning, senior
Jack Paladino put the Devils on the board with a home run to left-center field. Junior
Brad Norris allowed runners in each of the first three innings, but was able to escape a jam each time.
In the fourth, Misericordia nicked Norris for four runs on only three hits. Norris was not charged with any earned runs during the frame, taking advantage of three Devils errors.
The Cougars sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth, taking on the final seven runs they would score. Misericordia only notched three hits again during the inning, as a trio of walks with one out brought in two runs.
FDU's bats came alive for three runs in the top of the sixth. Franco hammered a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall, while Paladino singled. After a walk to senior
Joseph Bonaccorso, sophomore
Michael Tufano reached on an error, allowing Paladino to score. Junior
Joseph DeFeo produced an additional run with a double-play, but the Devils were unable to get any closer.
Paladino went 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring twice, and Bonaccorso reached base in all three plate appearances.
