MADISON, N.J. (April 29, 2018) - The FDU baseball team was clipped by Misericordia 8-5 in the home finale Sunday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 10-26, 3-18 within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. Misericordia improves to 27-10, 17-4 in the MAC Freedom.
FDU surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning. After the leadoff batter reached on an error, Tyler Holzapfel doubled to score a run. Two batters later, Steven Weisensee knocked in Holzapfel with a single to left. FDU escaped further damage, as senior
David Wilbur picked off Holzapfel to end the frame.
Junior
Ian Havran and freshman
AJ Yurista led off the bottom of the first with singles, but couldn't score as the next three hitters were retired in order. Freshman
Jeremy Bello allowed a runner on base in each of the next three innings, but was able to get out of harms way without surrendering a run.
Misericordia tacked on four additional runs in the fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Weisensee dunked a single into left field, scoring a pair. The following hitter, Sean Lyons, doubled into deep right center which also scored two.
The Devils got on the board in the fifth, scoring four times. Wilbur led off with a four pitch walk, and moved to third on a single from freshman
Matt Nodoro. Havran drove in Wilbur with a sacrifice fly, while Yurista walked to put runners on first and second. Senior
Reynaldo Diaz drilled a double down the left field line to score Nodoro, while classmate
Christopher Franco singled into left, plating two more.
After freshman
Joseph Kastner allowed a base runner in the sixth, the guests nicked Kastner for a pair of unearned tallies in the seventh. A potential inning-ending ground ball eluded the Devils fielder, allowing the hitter to reach on an error. Another error allowed a run to score, while Sean Boylan singled through the left side to score another run.
Franco singled on a 2-2 pitch to leadoff the eighth, while classmate
Jack Paladino doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. After a pop-up, freshman
Nate Peacock singled up the middle to score Paladino. With the tying run at the plate, Misericordia induced an inning-ending double play to end the rally.
Yurista and Franco each had a pair of hits, while Bello went five innings with three strikeouts.
