MADISON, N.J. (April 26, 2018) - The FDU softball team swept Drew 6-0 and 2-1 Thursday afternoon.
With the victories, FDU improved to 18-16 on the season.
GAME 1: FDU-Florham 6, Drew 0
Freshman
Linda Rizzo allowed two runners to get on base in the top of the first inning, but a fly-out to centerfield ended the inning. The Devils, who went scoreless through the first two frames, got on the board in the third.
Sophomore
Annamarie Santangelo walked and moved to third on a bunt and an infield hit by
Gabby Young. Young swiped second, but the catcher threw trying to nail Santangelo going back to third. The throw went into left field allowing Santangelo to score.
The Devils added to their lead in the fourth. After junior
Courtney Rohde reached on a one-out fielder's choice, senior
Michelle Mangini came up and sent 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homerun.
Rizzo worked a perfect 1-2-3 fifth and FDU would tack an additional run in the home fifth. Young singled to short after a seven pitch at-bat and stole second. Two hitters later, senior
Rebecca DeCarlo doubled to right, scoring Young. Sophomore
Megan Zaccario entered in the sixth and hurled the final two innings, allowing just one baserunner.
The Devils closed out the scoring in the sixth. Freshman
Nicole Casale delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle to lead off the frame. Two batters later, senior
Frannie Jarin came up and homered over the left field fence. For Jarin, it was the first home run of her career.
DeCarlo was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Young was 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases.
GAME 2: FDU-Florham 2, Drew 1
The Rangers got a leadoff double and two batters later, and infield single to notch the first run of the nightcap. The Devils answered back in their first at bat. Young reached on an error leading off and moved to second on a walk. After a fielder's choice and infield fly out, Rohde singled up the middle to load the bases. Mangini singled through the left side, knotting the game at 1.
FDU took the lead in the second, starting off with a single from freshman
Dani Sames. A groundout moved Sames to second, and Santangelo grounded a ball that went under the shortstop's glove to score Sames from second.
The Devils threatened in the third, as DeCarlo and Rohde led off the inning with back-to-back singles. They were stranded on second and third as the three hitters were retired.
Freshman
Abbey Scarengelli took over in the fourth, scattering just three hits over the final three innings to earn the win. Rohde went 2-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base.
FDU hosts Misericordia on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Before the first game, the FDU softball program will honor the four seniors playing in their final home game.
